  4. What’s new? Early challenges to web apps: • Bandwidth • Round trip for every web transaction New changes: • Bandwidth high • Reliable • AJAX [Asynchronous JavaScript And XML]

  5. Apps to look at • Gmail • Calendar • Talk • Spreadsheets • Writely [docs] • Page Creator • Notebook • Picasa • Sketchup

Gmail Interface & Navigation: Conversation style mails – threaded Labels rather than folders Integration: chat from within gmail scans for appointments and puts it on cal Import/Export: Import – fwd to be set in other accounts Export – Can fwd and pop Negatives: No thunderbird look, no imap or pop client.

Calendar Interface and Navigation: Views, Agenda Add appointments [quick add] Keyboard shortcuts Integration: Gmail Reminders, alerts to several services Address book: auto-typing Sharing: share with public, friends. [edit, view only] can display other calendars alongside Adding public events is easy Import/Export: Supports: iCal, XML, CSV formats Negatives: No Sync’ing capability with handhelds, outlook at this time.

[18 fonts] Import/Export: Imports from html, ms word, etc Saves as html, rtf, word, openoffice, pdf Sharing: Public [all,selected], private[read, write] Integration: Can publish to blogs, Starring, tagging, archiving, revision tracking, rss feeds.

  14. Web Vs Local • Collaborate in office. • Not worry about the version # , upgrades • Don't have to download • Online storage • Not worry losing data because of crashes. • No emailing back/forth. cluttering inboxes. • Real time data. • Auto save

  15. Issues • Legal issues • Trust issues • Privacy laws • Security of data, et al Precedents of enterprise level hosted apps: Salesforce.com, Netsuite Needed: Good technical support.

  16. What to expect? • Gdrive? • Web presentation software: Thumbstack? It’s the 3rd/4th largest server maker [according to CNN report]. Planning on designing chips?
