  1. GREEN ENERGYBusiness Opportunities February 23, 2010

  2. Agenda • Green Energy Act • Feed-in Tariff (FIT) • MicroFIT • Solar Energy Configurations • Solar water heating • Solar photovoltaic (PV)

  3. Green Energy Green Economy Act (GEGEA) • Encourage renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and biogas • Create 50,000 Ontario jobs • Engineering, Trades, Construction, Utilities, Banking, Entrepreneurship, etc. • Guarantee specific energy revenue to owners of renewable projects • LDC given energy conservation “targets” • Eliminate coal from the power supply by 2014

  4. Feed-in Tariff (FIT) Spa Hot Springs Motel Tracking Solar Arrays www.pasolar.ncat.org • Simple way to contract for renewable energy generation • Stable long-term contracts adequately compensate owners of renewable generation projects for their initial costs • Projects must be greater than 10 kW

  5. Micro-FIT • Renewable projects of 10 kW or less • Examples include solar panels on roof • Project must meet domestic content requirements – good for local jobs! • Various business opportunities • Own • Lease your roof • Community-based micro-FIT project

  6. Micro-FIT – Sample BenefitsExample – Solar PV Roof-mounted Project Space required = 20 square metres Generating capacity = 3 kW Project cost = $30,000 Payment = 80.2 cents/kWh Simple payback = 12 years (approx.)

  9. Solar Energy ConfigurationsPhotoVoltaic (PV) Power Generation Example of PV is a • Solar Calculator How it works? • Sunlight strikes surface • Releases electrons ( - ) • Creates positive charge ( + ) • Similar to a battery this charge creates current Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Photoelectric_effect.svg
