Evaluating PPN Parameter Gamma in General Relativity Using Satellite Laser Ranging Data

This study presents an evaluation of the PPN (Parametrized Post-Newtonian) parameter Gamma as a test of General Relativity (GR) through Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) data. Conducted by Ludwig Combrinck at the HartRAO during the 16th International Workshop on Laser Ranging in Poznan, Poland, in October 2008, the research estimates Gamma as a solve-for parameter using a least-squares approach. Initial results indicate RMS of the observed-minus-calculated (O-C) values are utilized for filtering mis-modeling effects, highlighting the importance of GR radial acceleration in the context of two-way ranges, with plans for further evaluation using extended data sets and improved gravity models.

  2. Gamma estimated as a solve-for parameter in least-squares sense • RMS of O-C used as criteria for filter to reduce effect of mismodelling • SLR strength is 2-way range, and GR radial acceleration is mostly radial • Results preliminary, longer time span, combination of LAGEOS/LAGEOS II and evaluation of different gravity models to follow, effects of modelling improvement should be apparent in errors
