8. We will now read chapters 7 and 8 ofTouching Spirit Bear together. As we read, make a T chart identifying the page number and example of any similes and metaphors you see in these chapters. Also, pull text to support your answer for your assigned question.

The bear waited calmly, as if a part of the landscape, like a tree or a boulder, not conceding one inch of space. He watched the thick white smoke drifting upward like a twisted ribbon dissolving into the sky. He returned to shallow, tentative breaths, drawing air past his lips as if he were sipping from a straw. The hard ground pushed at his wounded body like a big hand shoving him away. He dared not throw up, but he felt the urge coming like a freight train and he couldn't get off the tracks. Surviving on this island would be a piece of cake.

What weapon does Cole create and how does he make it? What does he intend to use it for? 3. Cole plans on escaping the island, yet still attempts to kill Spirit Bear. What does this say about his respect for life? 4. As Cole inches towards Spirit Bear, he stops, looks around, and becomes aware that nobody is watching and he could easily back away. What compels him to keep approaching Spirit Bear? 5. Describe Spirit Bear and its characteristics. 6. What do you think will happen when Cole gets close enough to kill Spirit Bear? 7. Describe Spirit Bear’s attack on Cole. 8. As Cole lays bleeding, he thinks to himself “What luck… to end up on an island with a stupid bear that didn’t have brains enough to run away.” Has Cole realized his responsibility for what has happened? 9. Cole states he would rather be in a prison cell than on the island. What are his reasons? 10. What does Cole’s crushing of the caterpillar indicate about his personality, even in his beaten state? 11. Look back to Peter’s comments at the Circle on page 50.
