  1. Fulfillment of the Covenant :The Abraham Cycle (God’s promise: Genesis 12, 13, 17)POWERPOINT 6A

  2. Red Letter Outline • List at least 5 of the critical elements of the promise to Abraham made repeatedly, and extended, in Genesis. (Gen 12:1-3; Gen 13:14-17; Gen 17:1-9) • What are three important things YHWH asks Abram to do? • What is the covenant of circumcision? What are the consequences of not circumcising? (Gen 17) • What conclusions can one draw about YHWH, based on the covenant with Abraham? • What conclusions can one draw about Abraham in the establishment of the covenant?

  3. Prayer of the WeekPsalm 63:2-9 • O God, you are my God-- for you I long! For you my soul is thirsting, My body pines for you, like a dry, weary land without water. So I look to you in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory. • For your love is better than life; my lips will speak your praise. So I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands, calling on your name. • My soul shall be filled as with a banquet, my mouth shall praise you with joy. On my bed I remember you; on you I muse through the night watches. • For you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I rejoice. My soul clings to you; your right hand holds me fast.

  4. The Promise to Abraham(Genesis chapters 12, 13 ,17) List at least 5 of the critical elements of the promise to Abraham made repeatedly, and extended, in Genesis. (Gen 12:1-3; Gen 13:14-17; Gen 17:1-9) • “To your descendents I will give this land” • “I will blessyou” • “I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you” • “I will make your name great” • “I will make of you a great nation” • You will be the father of a multitude of nations • “All the families of the earth will bless themselves by you” • the land is “an eternal possession” given to Abraham

  5. Genesis 12, 13, 17 What are three important things YHWH asks Abram to do? • Leave land; go where he shows him; • Explore the land; walk around it; • Keep covenant: circumcision

  6. GENESIS 17 What is the covenant of circumcision? What are the consequences of not circumcising? (Gen 17) • Abraham’s side of the promise: every male of 8 days old shall be circumcised “in the flesh of his foreskin” • This covenant “in the flesh” shall be “an everlasting covenant” • If a male’s foreskin is not cut off, “he shall be cut off from his people.” • This is the basic rite of initiation into Judaism, to become one of God’s people. • It will become an important issue at the origin of the Christian church: do non-Jewish converts need to be circumcised?

  7. The Covenant: YHWH What conclusions can one draw about YHWH, based on the covenant with Abraham? • YHWH’s dedication to Abraham; • YHWH has a plan to be worked out; • YHWH is good: the plan involves blessing; the plan is universal, and eternal; it reveals His providence

  8. The Covenant: Abraham What conclusions can one draw about Abraham in the establishment of the covenant? • He has a consistent and abiding faith in YHWH; • He is committed to do YHWH’s will; obedient • He understands his life in relation to YHWH; • He is prepared to do even painful things; commitment “in the flesh”
