Air Namibia Strategy for Employee WellnessComprehensive and integrated Company response- Health Promotion Programs e.g. TB & malaria management- Employee Assistance Programs e.g. Alcohol abuse, individual & group counseling- Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Programs- Occupational Health & Safety – ISO standards- Community involvement / Social Investment

  3. Prevention, Education and Awareness The programme project will facilitate continuous HIV/AIDS education and awareness of the employees, their families and their immediate communities through providing: • Targeted Peer Education, with an integrated approach for monitoring and evaluation as well as an appropriate supervision mechanism • Information, Education, Communication (IEC) and Health Promotion Campaigns including promoting VCT and condom use, TB, STIs e.g. regular messages on payslips, company newsletter • Community involvement, e.g. AIDS education for families All elements are considered in a coordinated manner, supported by the continuous IEC/health promotion campaigns, incorporating various informational, promotional, and behaviour materials and messages.

  4. Comprehensive Health Care Support • The Air Namibia provides access to: • Relevant comprehensive Health Care services including quality assessment of health care services: • Clinics and Medical doctors which guarantee a systemic approach for patients with Sexual Transmitted Diseases/Infections (STD/Is) and which guarantee Directly Observed Treatment, Short Course Chemotherapy (DOTs) for TB patients • After thorough and careful investigation, offer Antiretroviral Therapy treatment • Home based care - networking • Voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) centres of HIV status (by trained and supervised counsellors and qualified health personnel) - referrals

  5. Comprehensive Health Care Support • Condom availability / distribution / condom dispensers (Social marketed & free condoms) • The referral system to the health services and other relevant services Air Namibia developed a monitoring system and linked it with the prevention and awareness component.

  6. Benefit schemes In order to minimize the impact of HIV and AIDS on the company and its employees Air Namibia: • Conducted an HIV/AIDS impact assessment / institutional audit of the workforce and their dependents • Reviewed and remodel the employee benefit schemes • Negotiated the revision of the services of the Medical aid scheme – now all employees are covered! • Enhanced the capacity for managing ill health and developed programmes to manage increased absenteeism, reduced productivity, higher labour turnover, and loss of skills – relevant HR information

  7. Management Commitment In order to involve management in Air Namibia’s programme: • Involved management in company events with regard to HIV/AIDS (e.g. World AIDS Day, Wellness Days) • Market Air Namibia as champion of being a caring corporate social citizen • Invest in human health and well being as a priority – cooperate identity • Designed a letter of commitment from the management towards HIV/AIDS and well being – displayed at all venues • Involved management in IEC campaigns • Involved management in VCT campaigns as role models • HIV/AIDS an agenda point at all levels • Provided management with specially designed information sessions and practical workshops

Monitoring and Evaluation • All of the above mentioned components were accompanied by thorough formative and baseline research, including the analyses of a KAPB Survey, prevalence survey, Cost-benefit-analysis and an institutional audit. • This baseline data was used and is still used for adapting components of Air Namibia’s programme in order to be need orientated and remain relevant to the diverse target groups. • This data formed the basis of the M&E system

  9. Results The results from the implementation of the above-described components: 1. Increased information, education and communication about wellness and the new services at Air Namibia among all employees in order to decrease stigma and increase preventative and care seeking behaviours. 2. Ensure adequate and cost-effective benefits in order to meet employees’ needs in the HIV prevalent environment while minimizing the cost of HIV/AIDS impact on Air Namibia’s operational activities.

  10. Results 3. Increased effectiveness of Air Namibia Services (Cooperation with Health Services) related to HIV/AIDS prevention and care (e.g. doubled the enrolment in the HIV managed care programme). 4. Increased commitment and sensitisation of management towards the impact of HIV/AIDS at Air Namibia and prevention and awareness programmes.
