Individualized Spelling Lists Your Guide to Spelling in Middle School
Why? • This differentiated approach to spelling allows students of all ability levels to work on words that will help them improve as readers and writers versus giving the same list to everyone.
How it’s Done • Every other week you will select 7-10 (depending on your class) spelling words to be tested on for that week. • You will self-select your words from a combination of three places: “My Words” list, “Spelling Rule” list and “Frequently Misspelled Middle School Words” list
“My Words” Lists • These are words that you find in your writing that you find difficult to spell, or words that you consistently misspell. • You may identify them and/or I will identify them in your writing. Add these to your My Words list in your Spelling section of your binder.
My Words List • You may also find words from your reading to add to you My Words list. These may be words that you are unsure of when you are reading. • 3-6 words on your spelling list from the week will come from your “My Words” list.
Spelling Rule • On the week of a Spelling Test, I will present a spelling rule, and we will generate a list of words using this rule • You will be responsible for writing down the rule and writing twenty of the words from the list. • 2 of your spelling words must come from this list.
Frequently Misspelled MS Words • A copy of this list will be distributed to you for reference. • You must select 2 words from this list to add to your spelling list for the week. • Once you have mastered the spelling of that word, you will place a check next to it.
Weekly Routine – Day 1 • Class will generate a list of words based on the spelling rule of the week. • You will copy down the rule and list as it is generated. • Now pick 2 words from the rule list, 2 words from the Frequently Misspelled Words list and look over returned papers for circled words. • Select 6 words from your writing or reading to complete the list you will study for the week.
Day 2 – Making Connections • Complete the Spelling Study Technique: Making Connections guide • You may work on this in class for 15 minutes and finish at home
Day 3 – Write and Check • Complete the Write and Check study guide • You may work on this for 15 minutes in class and complete the rest for homework.
Day 4 – Spelling Menu • Choose an options from the Spelling Menu to work on this day. • You may work on it in class for 15 minutes and complete the rest for homework.
Spelling Test • You will partner with another student and administer each others’ spelling test. • Turn in the spelling test to your class’s wire basket. • All practice will be completed in your Spelling Journal
