  1. Flagstaff: Place, Space, and Change Over Time

  2. Field Study: In this exercise, students will… endeavor to explore, analyze, and interpret the physical, cultural, economic, and historical landscape of Flagstaff using landmarks, structures, and the overall urban environment as primary sources.

  3. Ultimately, the goal is to juxtapose the landscape as it is now with the landscape as it was at various times in the past with emphasis on the idea of change over time.

  4. How? • Students will engage in observational fieldwork with the existing landscape while simultaneously using primary source analysis of photographic and written records from the past to better understand Flagstaff.

  5. In creating their own final products, students must consider… • Change over time! • Original use, intended use, and current uses, purposes, and significances of space and place • Significance of place and space in terms of history, culture, economics, perspective and usage… • Natural vs. Cultural Landscape • Local vs. Tourist interests • Small business vs. Big business interests and influences • Tradition vs. Modernity • Intended vs. Unintended (use of space and significance of place) • Multiple Use Concept!

  6. How do I connect this back to the study of world history/civilization studies as a whole?
