Task 1 Instructions • Find the source text in your chosen language. • Ignoring the existing translation in your target language, how much background research would you need to do to produce a translation? What resources would you use for your research? • Compare the two texts (English versions) for the task: how do they differ in terms of research required for doing a translation? • Use the IATE and UNTerm banks to find equivalents of technical terms in the texts in your languages.

Task 2 (EU) • Study last week’s text (updated versions eg. 2007), searching http://eur-lex.europa.eu/en/index.htm for EEC Council: Regulation no. 1 determining the languages to be used by the European Economic Community • Compare different language versions. Do they transmit the same meaning (as ‘equally valid’ texts)? • Summarize the EU language policy.
