Important Terms & Definitions Messina – city in Italy where the Plague first appeared in 1347 Black Death – the bubonic plague that spread over Europe in 14th century Plague – a disease that causes widespread death Pestilence – a deadly disease Famine – a time period of very little food, resulting in starvation Immune – someone who is protected from getting a disease Endemic – belonging to or being native to a specific area

Important Terms & Definitions Bacillus – a type of bacteria Bubonic Plague – a form of plague transmitted by fleas from infected rats Pneumonic Plague – a form of plague transmitted directly from person to person normally by coughing Buba – the inflammatory swelling of the glands or boils that would form below the skin on victims of the Black Death Flagellants – group of people who would whip and beat themselves in penance for their sins and the sins of society during the times of the Black Death

  13. Homework You must pick one of the following Rolls: Doctor, Dying Person, or a Rat and write about the Topic, using the correct Format and considering the Audience. This assignment is due the class after you present your poster.
