Introduction-1 • The word used here for judging is krino • It means to make a decision, to select or to choose • Resulting in the approval of what is chosen and the rejection or condemnation of what is not chosen • Many think that this is an absolute prohibition against censoring anyone for anything at any time • But that is a selective and false application of Jesus’ words • In Jn. 7:24, He said “judge with righteous judgment”

Introduction-2 • Jesus did not prohibiting all judging but the wrong type of judging • Judging like that of the scribes and Pharisees • That condemned whole groups of their countrymen such as the tax collectors and Samaritans • His words should guide and restrict the judgments that we make of others today • Let us consider this matter of judging others

  4. The Need for Judging Others-1 1. Civil governments could not punish lawbreakers without judging their behavior • Jesus did not forbid civil judgments • Most people understand this • We can’t obey the other instructions given by Jesus and His apostles without making judgments about others 2. We must judge concerning those who are false teachers- Rom. 16:17

  5. The Need for Judging Others-1 3. We must judge concerning those with whom we will closely beassociated and those we should avoid- I Cor. 15:33 4. We must judge concerning those who have sinned against us andneed correction- Mt. 18:15 5. We must judge concerning those who are in need of being restore, and who should try to restore them- Gal. 6:1 • These are some of the private judgments that christiansmust make in order to follow Christ

  6. The Judging that Jesus Prohibited-1 1. Hypocritical judging • The type of judging used by the scribes and Pharisees • Though their hearts were filled with pride and corruption, they readily condemned the sins of others- Mt. 23:27 & Lk. 18:11 • They condemned Jesus’ disciples for picking and eating grain on the Sabbath- Mt. 12:7 • And condemned Jesus of blasphemy and had Him crucified because He said He was the Son of God- Mt. 26:65

The Judging that Jesus Prohibited-2 • Jesus said that we need to consider our own condition before we condemn others- V5 • If we are guilty of the same or similar sins, we condemn ourselves along with those we have judged • Hypercritical, fault-finding judging • That is ready to find and condemn the smallest fault in others • Jesus spoke of a speck in a brother’s eye

The Judging that Jesus Prohibited-3 • It is much easier to see the faults of others than our own faults • None of us is perfect nor a perfect standard for others • Just because others may have different opinions and do things differently from us, does not mean they are wrong • Hasty and dishonest judging • Judgments based on one incident or just a little information- Jn. 7:24 • People’s words are sometimes taken out of context • To make them appear worse than they are

The Judging that Jesus Prohibited-4 • It tends to put the worst interpretation on the words and actions of others- Mt. 11:19 • It is an unfair and evil way of judging others • Unmerciful judging • That demands the greatest punishment for others even for the least offense • This was the habit of the scribes and Pharisees- Jn. 5:16

  10. Righteous Judging-1 • The kind of judging that Jesus requires- Jn. 7:24 • Judging by the right standard • Not based on personal preferences or prejudices • Using God’s word as our standard • Then it is His judgment not our own • Fair judging • Not based on appearances, rumors and gossip

Righteous Judging-2 • Evaluating all the things we have seen and heard ourselves • Merciful judging • That seeks and desires the best in others • That considers our own weaknesses and failings- Gal. 6:1 • And is willing to forgive others who fail • The way that Jesus judged the adulterous woman- Jn. 8:10-11

Righteous Judging-3 • We are going to be judged without mercy if we are unmerciful to others- Mt. 7:2 & Jas. 2:13 • Judging in love- Jas. 2:8 • Judging others the way that we want to be judged • All of us want to be judged honestly, fairly, kindly, and mercifully • Therefore this is the way we should judge others • When we judge others this way we are judging righteously

In Conclusion • Jesus did not teach that we should never judge others • He said we should judge ourselves before judging others • Applying God’s standard to ourselves as well as others • We must make judgments about the words and actions of others • Let us make sure that we judge righteous judgment • What is your judgment of your relationship to Christ this morning?
