  3. Health reform, education and the empowerment of women and youth. • These are sound investments that are necessary for development. Although the price tag is modest, needs are great. • The world’s governments must increase development assistance in order to meet them.

  4. Why is gender equality critical to poverty reduction?

  5. Progress towards the implementation of the United Nations Charter—which inshrines equality between women and men—has been shamefully slow

  6. Investing in young people is one of the most strategic investments a country can make in both the short, and long, term. • Failure to do so could entrench poverty for generations to come.

  7. Violence against women and girls is a silent epidemic of alarming proportions. Beyond the immeasurable suffering it causes, it also robs countries of the full socio-economic participation of half the population.

  8. In the wake of war, health and school systems collapse and infant and maternal mortality rates skyrocket • Where rape is used as a weapon of war, STIs and violence can lead to an intensification of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in areas where prevalence was once low

  9. In the aftermath of conflicts and natural disasters, the active participation of women and young people offers a real opportunity to construct a lasting peace, reduce poverty and enhance development. • The inclusion of formerly-marginalized groups will enable societies to forge more equitable political and social systems and to build a future where human rights means human rights for all.
