  2. Nouns • Noun: person, place , thing, or idea. Ex: computer, and candy • Common Nouns: names any one or groups of persons, places, things, or ideas; and is not capitalized. Ex: dog, cat , bugs • Proper Nouns: names a particular a person, place, thing, or idea and is capitalized. Ex: Michael Jackson • Concrete Nouns: names a person, place, or thing that can be perceived by one or more of the senses. Ex: thunder, poison ivy • Abstract Nouns: names an idea, a feeling, a quality, or a characteristic. Ex: love, pain, hatred, anger, freedom

  3. Pronouns • Pronouns: is a word that is used in place of one or more nouns or pronouns. Ex: he, she, them, they, several • Antecedents: is the word or words that a pronoun stands for. Ex: Alfred sent Julie and Dave the money he owed them. [ Alfred is the antecedent of he. Julie and Dave are the antecedent of them.] • Personal Pronoun: refers to the one speaking(first person), the one spoken to (second person), or the one spoken about(third person). Ex: First person: I, me, my, we, us , our, ours second person: you, yours and your third person: he, him, his, she, her, hers, it, its, they, them, their, and theirs • Demonstrative pronouns: is used to point out a specific person, place, thing, or idea. Ex: The tacos I made taste better than those. • Interrogative pronouns: it introduces a question. Ex: What is your pets name?

  4. Adjectives • Adjectives: a word that is used to modify a noun or pronoun. Ex: What kind?-gray skies, far fetched tale, Irish lace Which one?-either way, next day, those girls, last chance How many?-five fingers, one river, two dogs, fewer hours • Demonstrative adjectives: when they modify nouns and pronouns. Ex: Did Jennifer draw this picture or that one? • Pronoun or adjective?: pronouns can take place for nouns or other pronouns, but when used as adjectives they modify nouns or pronouns. Ex: pronouns adjectives I like that. I like that shirt. Either will do. Either car will do. • Articles: frequently used adjectives are a, an, and the. Ex: A girl won. An elephant escapes.

  5. Verbs • Verbs: A word that used to express action or a state of being. Ex: Sierra ran across the country. • Helping Verbs: Helps the main verb express action or a state of being. Ex: can, could, did, do… etc. • Action verbs vs. Non- action verbs Non- Action verbs are helping verbs. Non- Action ex.: She had always been thinking of her future. Action ex.: The audience cheered the lead actors. Action verbs express physical and mental actions.

  6. Adverbs • Adverbs: Modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. • Note: adverb tells where, when, how or to what extent. • Example of adverbs modifying adjectives: • Beth did an exceptionally fine job. [the adverb exceptionally modifies the adjective fine, telling to what extant. • Examples of Adverbs modifying other adverbs: Calvin was almost never there. [the adverb almost modifies the adverb never, telling to what extant.]

  7. Prepositions • Preposition: a word that shows relationship of a noun or a pronoun to another word. Ex: Candy went under the bridge to get her doll. Ex. Commonly Used Prepositions: about, before, concerning, down, from, in, like, near, of, past, since, through, under, with Ex. Compound Prepositions: According to, In place of, because of, out of, aside from, instead of, in front of, by means of, in addition to, next to, as of, on account of, prior to

  8. Conjunctions • Conjunctions: a word that joins, words or words groups. Ex: FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so • Coordinating Conjunctions: joins words, or word groups that are used in the same way. Ex: Judy wrote down the number, but she lost it. • Correlative Conjunctions: are pairs of conjunctions that join words or word groups that are used in the same way. Ex: Both Jim and Robert were outstanding athletes.

  9. WOAH THERE! Interjections OMG! • Interjection: a word that expresses emotion. Ex: Hey! Be careful of that wire! SQUIRREL! What the freak!? Hey!
