  3. Biography • Born Dec. 27, 1822 in France. • Earned a Doctorate from Ecole Normale in Paris. • In 1854 he was appointed Chemistry teacher at the University of Lille.

  4. At the University of Lille one of the goals for the faculty was to find and fix the problem with the wine industry – wine soured before it could be consumed.

  5. Pasteurization • Wine and beer soured because of bacteria. • To get rid of this bacteria he boiled the liquid and then cooled it. • He later discovered that boiling milk had the same effect, giving the products longer shelf lives.

  6. Spontaneous Generation • Spontaneous Generation- The supposed development of living organisms from non-living matter. • He was able to prove that spontaneous generation is wrong. • This helped figure out the problems with the silkworms and their bacteria.

  7. Vaccines • Pasteur later began to support the germ theory. • He is best known for creating a vaccine for rabies. • His experiments about germ theory proved that sanitation was important in hospitals.
