  15. Misunderstandings Peter Connelly is an English teacher from Canada. He has worked in many countries and he has had many interesting experiences. Sometimes he is very shocked by the things that his students say and do. But Peter knows that people from other countries often do things differently from the way he does them. Peter thinks that is important to understand our cultural differences.

  16. Misunderstandings When Peter was teaching in a high school in Vietnam, he often felt frustrated. His students worked hard and did well in their tests. But during class, they never spoke. Peter thought that they didn’t like him! One day, Peter told another teacher about his problem. The teacher told him that in Vietnam, it is very rude for students to speak in class. They are expected to listen to their teachers and write down everything they say. They are not usually asked what they think.

  17. Misunderstandings Peter also taught in Chile. Many of his students came late every day. At first, Peter got angry with them. In Canada, students are never late for school! But then he noticed that almost everyone was late in Chile. Peter was often the only person at school on time! He found out that people in Chile have a different idea of time. If he arranged to meet someone at 6.00, they often didn’t arrive until 6.30 or 6.45! Once Peter understood this, he relaxed and enjoyed his stay.

  18. Misunderstandings Peter thinks our cultural differences make the world an interesting and exciting place.
