Facts and Statistics • Poorest country in the Americas • 64 deaths per 1000 births • Over 7% of children die at birth • 4th most corrupted country in the world • Gross national income per capita is US$660 • 78% of population live under US$2 a day ( around 10 million) • 54% of population live under US$1 a day • 2/3 of labor force do not have formal jobs • Life expectantcy is 61 years • For every 100,000 births 523 women died in Hait compared to Europe were for every 100,000 births 8 women died • 8% Haitian children never see their first birthday

Education • 1/3 of girls over 6 never go to school • 30% of primary school kids will not make it to the 3rd grade where as 60% will drop out • 25% of teacher have not even attended highschool • 75% of all teachers lack adequate training; many have just a 9th grade or 12th grade education, with no teacher training at all. • Less than 20% schools have electricity • Only 39% have drinkable water • 15% have a library • Roughly 40% of the population don’t know how to read and write • Estimated annual school costs average US$131 per child (including uniform, books/materials and transportation).  • $98AUS can educate 1 haitian child for the entire year • All leads to Child Labor http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnklOtfJRSE&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PLCC56FC110186A782
