  5. Effects of Spark • Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia • Activates alliances; who must help Austria Hungary: Germany & Italy • Russia, France, Great Britain gear up for war to help Serbia

  6. Map • Pick 3 different colors • Use map in textbook (pg. 680) to shade which countries were allied powers, central powers, and neutral powers • Make sure to shade in key to match the colors you used • Glue map in ISN

  8. Guns • Ex.- bolt action rifle; machine guns; large field guns (artillery) • Description: bolt action rifle used in the trenches; machine guns needed 4-6 men to operate, had to be on a flat surface, had fire power of 100 guns; large field guns long range and devastating blows, shells exploded on impact

  9. Zeppelin • Description: blimp, was used as an airship in bombing raids by the Germans, carried machine guns and bombs, easy to shoot out of the sky

  10. Gas • Ex.- chlorine gas; mustard gas • Description: chlorine gas used by Germans, caused burning sensation in the throat and chest pains, death is painful; mustard gas was most deadly weapon used, it was fired in trenches, colorless and takes 12 hours to take effect, blistering skin, vomiting, sore eyes, death can take up to 5 weeks

  11. Tank • Ex.- Little Willie • Description: developed to cope with conditions on the Western Front, needed a crew of 3, max speed was 3 mph, could not cross trenches; modern tank could carry 10 men and had a revolving turret (rotating gun)

  12. Planes • Description- used for the first time in WW1, deliver bombs and for spying, later became armed with machine guns, bombs, and sometimes canons. Fights between two planes is known as “dogfights”

  13. Torpedoes • Used by submarines to blow up ships carrying supplies from America to Britain… eventually the reason for Americans joining the war on the Allied side

  14. Weapon Stations • You will move around the room to learn about different weapons used in World War 1 & make inferences as to how these weapons contributed to more casualties • Each station you will have 3 minutes to work with your group

  15. Reflection Activity-What Am I? • You will pretend you are one of the weapons used in World War 1 • You will provide 3 hints/clues as to which weapon you are • At the bottom of the page- list which weapon you are Example: • I am colorless • I make it hard for you to breathe • I make your skin burn
