  3. BRAINSTORM • In your journal, write everything you know about the parts of a song in one minute. • Ready… set… GO!

  4. Let’s explore the different PARTS of a song. • The titleis the name • of thesong.

  5. The themeis the main subject of the song. • The hookis the part of the song that catches, or “hooks,” a listener's attention and makes the song easy to remember.

  6. The verseuses details to support the title, theme, and hook. Songs typically include multiple verses. • The chorusconveys the main subject of the song. The chorus is usually simpler than the verses, and it often contains the title.

  7. The bridgeintroduces a twist or new way of thinking about the song. It usually occurs toward the song’s end. Not all songs have a bridge.

A song outline is a rough sketch of what the lyrics will communicate. • Outline Example: • Title: "Beach Trip" • Verse 1 topic: Things I love about going to the beach • Chorus main idea: How much I love the beach • Verse 2 topic: Things I like to do at the beach • Verse 3 topic: Why I don’t want to leave the beach

  10. HOMEWORK • Song structure practice • Print or write down the lyrics to one of your favorite songs. • Follow the directions on the worksheet to analyze the song. • For an extra challenge,pick two or three more songs and outline them as well.
