  4. Financial Aid • Funds provided by different sources to pay for post secondary education Sources: • Federal programs • State programs • Institutional programs

  5. Financial Aid Includes • Grants: doesn’t have to be repaid • Loans: Must be repaid with interest • Work study: Earn money while in school, (no repayment).

  6. Common Applications • Florida State Application (encouraged) • CSS Profile (required by some schools) • Federal Financial Aid (a must for every institution and any type of aid) • All these application are free of charge!!!

  7. Ways to Apply for Aid • Florida State Financial Aid: Available in December 1st www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org Students are encouraged to apply to be considered for state scholarships, including Bright Futures Scholarships

  8. Ways to Apply • CSS Profile: Non-federal aid funds. Certain colleges and universities required this application. Check with each institution. Available starting October of senior year http://profileonline.collegeboard.com

  9. Ways to Apply • Federal Financial Aid: Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online starting January 1st www. fafsa.gov

  10. Get a FAFSA PIN • Your Pin is your electronic signature • Request the PIN • Student • Parent www.pin.ed.gov Use this pin to file and make online Corrections.

  11. Common Documents Needed • Social security Number • Driver’s License or Florida Id • Federal income tax returns, parents and students, if applicable (IRS 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ) • Alien Registration Card, if you are not a citizen Keep these records handy, as you may need them again

  12. Application Deadline • Contact schools for exact deadlines dates. As with all applications, check with each individual institution, the type of deadline you are up against, especially if you are applying to start at a particular school term.

  13. After you submit your FAFSA • The student will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR), indicating the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) based on the information provided on the FAFSA • SAR can be mailed or emailed. • Review this information, and make sure you make corrections if necessary.

  14. Award Letters • Once accepted to a school, and applying to financial aid, you will receive award letters from each institution you listed in the FAFSA. • This letter tells how much money in grants, loan and work study they are receiving • Read this information carefully and follow any instruction that pertain to it. If you wish to accept pr decline the aid awarded, you must indicate it on the form, and return it to the financial aid office of the institution you applied

  15. What determines the amount of aid received? • The primary factor in determining the amount of aid you receive is your financial need. Cost of Attendance • Expected Family Contribution = Financial Need
