  3. Moral Theology is … • Scientific analysis and application of those principles of human conduct which derive both from reason and revelation

  4. Ethics is … • Moral Philosophy • Based on human reason alone and without the additional criterion of the Judeo/Christian faith

  5. TO BE Moral … • To be able to tell right from wrong • Can everyone do this?

  6. To be Amoral … • Having no moral standards or restraints • Unaware or indifferent to questions of right and wrong

  7. To be Immoral … • Violating moral principles • Not conforming to conduct established by a community or that is consistent with social and personal ethics

  8. To be Non –Moral …. • Having no moral or ethical standards • Examples from today’s society…?

  9. Looking @ Ethics or Morality … • Means looking at … • The right and wrong • The good and bad • The humanity or inhumanity • Can you sleep at night if you did X, Y, or Z?

  10. Studying Ethics and Morality … • Can be easy and hard • Can help you anticipate difficult choices • Will NOT make you automatically “good” • It can help you understand what it better • How to pursue what is best

Why study morality? • To know moral values are at stake in various situations • Clarify reasons behind moral judgments/decisions • Make some sense out of changing/conflicting moral values • Decide where you will stand on ethical decisions you will have to make • Understand why being ethical matters*

  12. Why study Ethics? • Other reasons… • Ethics allows you to live an authentic life • Ethics makes you more successful • Does it really? • Ethics allows you to cultivate inner peace • Ethics provides for a stable society • Ethics may help out in the after life
