  7. Characteristics of Shiga Prefecture Water basin for 15 million people in Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe & other area (2) Lake Biwa supports urban, industrialandagricultural activities. (1)Shiga Prefecture has natural wealth offered by Lake Biwa and its surrounding basins, and inherits the ancient culture andtradition. Lake Biwa The per-capita income: No.4 in Japan Shiga Prefecture is a leading environmental-conscious, industrial prefecture and promotes various activities related to natural ecosystems. Shiga Prefecture established UPS in 1995. Our university is the first one in Japan to create the School of Environmental Science.

  9. History of the University of Shiga Prefecture 1950: Junior College of Shiga Prefecture was founded. (2 Departments:Technical & Liberal Arts) 1956: Agricultural Junior College of Shiga Pref. was founded. 1958: College was restructured to 3 Department. (Technical, Agricultural & Home Economics) 1971: Nursing Department was established in College. 1995:University of Shiga Prefecture was founded. ( 7 Departments in 3 Schools: Engineering, Environmental Science, Human Cultures) 1999: Graduate Schools were established. 2003: School of Human Nursing was opened. 2007: University became Public University Corporation. (12 Departments in 4 Schools, 7 Divisions in 4 Graduate Schools)

  11. Dept. of Ecosystem Studies Focus on integral understanding of component processes and their interactions in natural and artificial ecosystems. Subjects dealt with: ・hydrospheric ecosystems such as lakes, marshesand rivers. ・terrestrial ecosystems such as forests, agricultural farms and residential areas ・atmosphere, lithosphere and biosphere

  12. Dept. of Environmental Policy and Planning Acquire knowledge and skills needed for individuals, organizations, and society to create more sustainable comfortable environment. Subjects dealt with: Environmental policy and planning, ranging from social sciences to natural sciences.

  13. Dept. of Design and Architecture Develop abilities to design living spaces and urban systems for harmony between human activities and regional environment. Subject dealt with: ・town and country planning ・urban design and community development ・landscape architecture

  14. Dept. of Biological Resources Management Aims at developing strong understanding and knowledge of proper control and management of biological resources. Subjects dealt with: ・biological resources and genetic resources. ・biological production based on botanical pathology and ecology. ・water and soil resources. ・economical policies considering harmonization and maintenance between production activities and the natural environment.

Optimization of refining process in high temperature glass melts. 2. Mechanism of brittle fracture and flow of inorganic glasses. 3. Thermal properties and their relaxation behaviors of high temperature glass melts.

Dept. of Ecosystem Functions ・Environmentally friendly agriculture system. ・Evaluation of marsh & forest ecology service function. ・Proper control method of ecology. Dept. of Build Environment ・Environmentally friendly building and its realization system. ・Trade & service city function and compact city. ・Traffic system foe enhancing shift from automobile. Research Center for Socio-ecological System(started in 2008)

  27. Special Projects Students’ Farm Project Started in 2004 as a MEXT program. Objective: Students carry out projects to activate local community with citizens. Outside Practice Field Works Research theme MEXT Projects Community-Architects Project Started in 2006 for 5 years, as a national program to reconstruct local community. Objective: train professionals to diagnose local community and organize the programs to reconstruct towns or local communities. Higher Education Environmental Leadership Training program(English Lectures) Started in 2008 as a program of Environmental Leadership Initiatives for Asian Sustainability. Objective: train professionals to work on the improvement of local environment, particularly water environment in Asia, and local revitalization.
