  4. The Purpose of the District PLCs • Support the implementation of our common district initiatives • Provide teachers with an opportunity to share ideas and collaborate with colleagues from around the district

Questions? • We want to make an effort to deliver deep, meaningful professional development to you each and every session. • Time is limited and we want to make good use of the 75 minutes. • Today – If you have questions about what is presented – please write them on a notecard. If you would like a personal response – please write down your name and school.

  6. Norms • Be on time – every time • Be prepared – bring back requested materials • Be present • No side conversations • Self-monitor your use of electronics • Avoid working on other tasks – stay focused on the topic at hand • Be respectful of your peers and the facilitator • Participate!

  7. SUMMER PD UPDATE April PLC feedback/questions: I’m excited about Summer PD and more in-depth info! Will technology training be part of the Math Materials training?

Summer PD 2014 • The elementary team is excited to have such a large number of teachers interested in Summer PD opportunities!  • All sessions open to all grade level teachers and support teachers/coaches • Sessions grouped by grade level band, “interventionists," or “coaches” to provide collaboration with position-alike colleagues • Thank you for your patience with the Infinite Campus registration.

Summer PD 2014 • Additional Day 2 Comprehensive Training & Collaboration Sessions have been opened for registration through Infinite Campus: • June 11th (target audience= 3-5 teachers/interventionists) at Botanical Center • June 12th (target audience= K-2 teachers/interventionists) at Botanical Center • August 11th (target audience = 3-5 teachers/interventionists at Hoover Media Center) • August 13th (target audience = K-2 teachers/interventionists at Hoover Media Center) • If any “Day 2” courses are taken in combination with a Math Materials Training, individuals can earn 1 AEA License Renewal or Drake EDEX Credit.

  10. Summer PD 2014 • Day 1 of Grade Level Comprehensive Training & Collaboration Sessions is identical to Math Materials 1 day Training Sessions: • Please register accordingly.

Summer PD 2014 • All sessions (Math Materials Training/Day 1 AND Literacy & Content Areas Sessions/Day 2) will focus on technology integration with time provided to explore resources and collaborate with grade level colleagues. • Math trainings will also focus on implementing the Go Math! Framework effectively, with emphasis on time and materials management based on feedback and questions generated by these PLC sessions.

Literacy Guides • Standards for each unit will remain the same for the 2014-2015 school year • Formatting of the guides has changed slightly. • Additional information about Journeys materials (titles/genre) have been added to each lesson • Please see the literacy website to view an example of the 2014-2015 formatting

Science/Social Studies Guides • Science and Social Studies guides will be printed and posted together in an effort to be cohesive and support planning for instruction • Formatting of the guides has been altered to be consistent with literacy guides • Please see the literacy website to view an example of the 2014-2015 formatting • Live links to resources have been added/revised to support planning for instruction

Health Guides • Standards have been added to the guides to support instruction • Lessons that use Interactive Technology through HealthTeacher.com have been indicated on the guides • Formatting of the guides has been altered to be consistent with literacy guides • Please see the literacy website to view an example of the 2014-2015 formatting • Revised Health read aloud book lists for each grade level are also available to support teachers and coaches in planning for instruction

  18. MATH MATERIALS UPDATE April PLC feedback/questions: I’m excited about new math and getting “stuff” for Go Math! Will support teachers get the materials to use for Go Math! or do we have to share with classroom teachers? When are we getting the teacher editions?

  19. The Manipulatives KitsArriving now 2 Manipulative Kits were ordered for every General Education Core Classroom = 30 student sets 1 Manipulative Kit was ordered for every Pull-Out Special Education Classroom = 15 student sets

  20. The Differentiated CentersArriving now 1 Differentiated Centers Kit was ordered for every General Education Core Classroom. 1 Differentiated Centers Kit was ordered for every Pull-Out Special Education Classroom.

  21. Bilingual Math BoardsArriving now Math Boards: • 30 Math Boards were ordered for every General Education Core Classroom. • 15 Math Boards were ordered for every Pull-Out Special Education Classroom.

Teacher EditionsArriving over the summer Teacher Editions were ordered for the following: • General Education Core Classrooms (per 2014-2015 allocation meeting numbers) • Title & ELL Interventionists (1 for every 2 sections at each grade) • SPED Push-In Interventionists(per SPED provided numbers) • SPED Pull-Out Classrooms(per SPED provided numbers)

  26. Blended Learning • Considerable time will be spent during our Summer PD sessions getting into what blended learning is, and how it will look in Des Moines with the adoption of our new materials.

  27. Blended Learning Blended learning involves an instructional shift in some portion of the day to an online environment. This shift is intended to make learning more productive by giving teachers better tools, more time, and informative data.

What it IS Utilizing available tools and resources to enhance and extend core instruction Utilizing software/technology data to guide instruction for students on and individual basis Utilizing resources to enhance and extend core instruction for students What it ISN’T Putting a student on a software program that isn’t tied to their core instruction Putting a student on a software program and not looking at and interpreting data Expecting a resource to be the primary provider of core student instruction

  31. We know this is hard, but important work… It will require us to focus on a small number of ambitious goals and make the implementation of technology the daily agenda.

Goals for our program • Support students in obtaining the Common Core Mathematics Standards through technology based instruction. • Utilize the Go Math materials upgrade to design a blended learning environment. • Provide students with personalized instruction, practice and formative feedback that support a competency based system.

What will a general education classroom look like next year? • Teacher Laptop (*Currently in place) • Document Camera (*Currently in place) • Interactive Projector • SMART Software (To be downloaded to the teacher’s laptop anytime after today) • 6 student devices per classroom • A charging solution for the devices *Please contact your building administrator if these items are not currently available in your general education classroom.

  38. Additional Projector Information • Wall mounted projector • Uses existing whiteboards as interactive displays • Installation into buildings will be done in the most efficient manner.

  39. Additional Projector Information • Projector will be touch enabled • Students and teacher can use their finger or any other object to interact with the computer using the board/projector • No need for an Infared(IR) pen • IR Pen is still included and available as a fallback resource

  40. Student Devices • 6 HP Revolve laptop/tablet devices will be distributed to classrooms for use with math instruction.

Student Devices • Emphasis has been placed on consistent materials with the math adoption • PD for these devices and their uses will be extensively provided • This would be a great opportunity for us to evaluate our current technology realities and distribute them to best enhance our new reality

  44. What is SMART Notebook? • SMART Notebook is an interactive software program. • It is not a piece of equipment. • It has the ability to enhance existing presentations or lessons. • It can also make various other software available for you to use.

  45. SMART Notebook Overview Purchase of SMART Notebook 14 for every teacher station in the district. This will need to be downloaded to your computer prior to the Summer PD sessions.

SMART Notebook 14 • SMART Notebook is available immediately for download on your teacher station. • It is currently housed in the district’s “Software Center”. • If you have questions about how to download the software, contact the customer service desk, X8161, or follow the link to Technology Resources.

  50. SMART Notebook 14 • The SMART Notebook software has the ability to enhance the interactive projector. • You must have the SMART Notebook software in order to run the interactive lessons provided with the Go Math materials next year.
