The Literature • Much literature contends directly with social problems or avoids completely • Essay: The big questions of religion, economy, crime, education, civil rights in context of rapid social/cultural changes wrought by industrialism • The Novel: Matures into a serious literary genre (not just for girls) • Realism portrays a whole society or complete individual • Poetry: Either problem-focused (Arnold) or sentimental & nostalgic (Tennyson) • Drama: Rise of the “problem play” as well as popular entertainment genres like the musical (Gilbert & Sullivan), the bedroom comedy, comedy of manners (Wilde). • Much of it serialized in periodicals – market-driven styles and literary forms (cf. Gaskell’s “Cranford” & Dickens)
