  1. Welcome Module 15 Challenging Behaviour

  2. Aim To enable adults to prevent and manage challenging behaviour in their sections.

  3. Objectives There are eight overall objectives for this module:- • List the types of challenging behaviour that might be exhibited by young people. • Identify the causes and triggers that may lead to unacceptable behaviour in young people. • Develop an action plan to manage those triggers and causes that are within your control. • Identify who is responsible for setting and enforcing acceptable standards of behaviour.

  4. Objectives – Cont. • Define and agree acceptable standards with young people and the adult leadership team. • Define and agree how to deal with challenges to agreed standards of behaviour taking into account the Young People First Code of Good Practice. • Identify where to obtain additional help and support to help deal with challenging behaviour. • Identify the procedures in POR relating to the dismissal of a young person from Scouting and have a clear understanding as to when this should be implemented.

  5. Session 1 Types and Causes of Challenging Behaviour

  6. Session 1 – Types and Causes of Challenging Behaviour Task 1 In small groups produce a generic statement as to how you would explain challenging/disruptive behaviour.

  7. Session 1 – Types and Causes of Challenging Behaviour TASK – 2 Write one example of either challenging or disruptive behaviour on a Post-it Note and stick it to the board.

  8. Challenging Behaviour Negative labelling Poor self-esteem Reinforced stereotypes Deteriorating skills Low expectations Fewer chances

  9. Challenging Behaviour Positive feedback Improved self-image Reinforced positive self-image Improved performance Higher expectations More opportunities

  10. Start A model for managingchallenging behaviour Observe Identify at least three positive qualities e.g. artistic, good swimmer, good practical skills. Observe Identify problem behaviours; e.g. bullying, shouting, general disruption. Aim to manage behaviour. Change may or may not be possible. Action List problems in order of priority. Action Choose one idea to try out. E.g. ignore the shouting. Reward Normal volume. Try it out. Observe Identify at least three positive qualities e.g. artistic, good swimmer, good practical skills. Try another idea. You are ready to tackle the next problem No Observe How did it go? Is it still a problem? Yes

  11. Session 2 Standards of Behaviour

  12. Session 2 – Standards of Behaviour Task 1 In small groups consider the following questions: • What should be included in a section/Group’s code of conduct? • If you already have a code of conduct, is it effective? If not, what improvements could be made/

  13. Session 2 – Standards of Behaviour Consider the following issues: • Should the behaviour of the Adult Leadership Team be a separate issue from the Code of Conduct for young people? • What is the role of parents in agreeing the Code of Conduct for Young People?

  14. Session 3 Additional Help and Support

  15. Session 3 – Additional Help and Support TASK - 1 Identify where to get additional help and support to deal with challenging behaviour.

  16. Session 3 – Additional Help and Support Help can be obtained from: • The Group Scout Leader • Other Leaders/Adults • Assistant District Commissioner (Section) • Assistant County Commissioner (Special Needs).

  17. Session 3 – Additional Help and Support TASK - 2 Identify the procedures in POR relating to the dismissal of a young person from Scouting

Session 3 – Additional Help and Support Policy, Organisation and Rules - Chapter 15 Disagreements, Suspension and Dismissal • Dismissal of Scout Network members must be approved by the County Network Commissioner. • Dismissal of Explorer Scouts must be approved by the District Explorer Scout Commissioner.

Session 3 – Additional Help and Support Policy, Organisation and Rules - Chapter 15 Disagreements, Suspension and Dismissal • Dismissal of Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts must be approved by the GSL (in a sponsored group the Sponsoring Authority must be consulted). • Young People have the right of appeal. For Scout Network members this is the County Commissioner. For other youth Members this is the District Commissioner.
