Acceleration—what’s your sign?? • Meaning of sign depends on direction of motion • Motion in + direction: • POSITIVE a means speeding up • NEGATIVE a means slowing down (ball thrown up) • Motion in – direction • POSITIVE a means slowing down • NEGATIVE a means speeding up (ball drop) • Mnemonic: signs SAME=speed up; signs DIFFERENT=slow down
