  7. Interview

  8. Advice on Choosing & Ordering Study Programmes Rule of ICAC: Interests Competitiveness Abilities Careers & Programme Prospects

  9. Things to prepare Predict what will be asked and prepare your own model answers e.g. a one-minute self-introductory speech, your strengths & weaknesses Collect relevant info from all possible sources Rehearse or conduct mock interviews Prepare & lay out neatly all relevant documents (with copies) in a clear folder Don’t stay up late. Have sufficient sleep.

  10. Things Expected by Interviewers on the Day Appropriate dress code (don’t be too casual!) Well-groomed appearance Punctuality & greeting Normally no handshaking Smiling, confidence, eye-contact Appropriate gestures and posture No mobile phone ringing & chewing gums

  11. Things to be Demonstrated during Interview Good Preparation creates Good Impression! Sound knowledge of the programmes and institutions Highlights of your academic achievements and non-academic strengths like ECAs. Say how you can contribute to the faculty/ department/university in these aspects

  12. Independent/critical thinking, social awareness, presentation/organization skills, value judgments Show YOU match the programme & university (Interview is a matching game after all)

Don’t make up ‘great answers’ or even bluff Ask for clarification or repetition when not understanding something. Don’t be a yes-man all the time

  15. Answer in appropriate length. Neither give just yes/no response nor a very long speech Show you’ve prepared to study the programme Don’t hard-sell so detailed (interviewers may have viewed your JUPAS reference/essay) Use examples to illustrate the vague terms such as ‘self-confident’, ‘extrovert’, etc

  16. Elaborate how the ECAs help you train up abilities or skills relevant for the study prog. Treat interviews as natural conversation, NOT prepared speech Make yourself interesting!

  17. Closing the Interview Ask sensible questions when prompted by interviewer. Show your genuine interest by asking insightful questions about the special features or recent/future developments of the department, or study/careers prospects Don’t ask time-consuming/very grand Qs Thank the interviewer sincerely at the end

  18.
