  3. Extreme Physical Therapy

  4. Sunrise at Kriunes

  5. Waterfalls & Geysers

  6. Superb Dinners ….

  7. And when you add Orn …

  8. Identical Twin Icelanders

  9. Swimming

  10. Blue Lagoon, Iceland • Hot geothermal pools with high salt, silicate, & mineral content • Clears psoriasis and other skin diseases • I asked Ingi if “bathing suits were optional” – “no you must wear an article of clothing”

  11. Icelanders Wore Bathing Suits, I Wore an Icelandic Hat

  12. Hemi-Sync: Headphones v. Speakers • >90% of my patients prefer headphones • Headphones are perceived by many patients to give a stronger Hemi-Sync effect • In a noisy environment (in hospital) consider headphones to block out extraneous noise (pages, voices, etc.) • Extremely noisy, use higher listening levels

  13. Headphones v. Speakers • Speakers: patients who prefer speakers often like to speak and dialogue during therapy. Be open to this possibility. Be flexible. The dialogue can be transformative. • In group settings, speakers allow all to participate in the experience.

  14. Hemi-Sync Environment • Empty Bladder First! • Empty Bladder First! • Empty Bladder First! • Empty Bladder First! • If Pregnant, Empty Bladder First! And Second! Place on left side late pregnancy. Keep session short (20 – 30 minutes tops).

  15. Hemi-Sync Environment • Quiet! Turn ringers off on phones! Remove pagers and cell phones! Turn volume down on answering machine! Remove watches with timers/chimes! • Remove interruptions! Make sure you have time to complete session. In hospital, I use sign “Hemi-Sync session ends at __, thank you for not interrupting!”

  16. Hemi-Sync Environment • Patient comfort! Warm enough? Need blankets, pillows (head, behind knees)? Yes! Position comfortable? • Eye shades extremely helpful. If patients have to squint to block out light, it is difficult to relax. Darken room if possible. • Loosen clothing, remove shoes, belts & tight jewelry, etc.

  17. Hemi-Sync Environment • Aromatherapy can accentuate the experience. A drop of rose oil beneath the nose can be wonderful! Candles, incense, etc. • Crystals can add greatly to the experience!

  18. DON’T ASK

  19. Sound and Healing • Sound can be used to induce alpha, theta, & delta brain wave states to promote healing • Toning (om, etc.) • Chanting (Gregorian, etc.) • Drumming (African, etc.) • Tibetan singing bowels

  20. Hemi-Sync Sound • Uses sound to induce particular brain states • May be used to induce sleep, relaxation, improve healing/memory/learning, reduce pain, weight loss • Aid to inducing out of body state

  21. Brain Wave States • Beta: >14 cps. Alert, awake. 80% waking state of adult. Stress experienced in beta. • Alpha: 8-14 cps. Self healing occurs, stress minimized. Most common brain wave state in meditation. 80% waking time children • Theta: 4-8 cps. Deep relaxation, healing, inspiration, insight, drowsiness • Delta: <4 cps. Deep sleep, coma, anesthesia

  22. Binaural beating occurs when two coherent sounds of nearly similar frequencies are presented one to each ear.

  23. The brain integrates the two signals, producing a sensation of binaural beating.

  24. The binaural beat is conveyed from each superior olivary nuclei to the reticular formation, which initiates changes in brain-wave activity.

  25. Hemi-Sync provides a safe, natural means to alter arousal states, attentional focus, and levels of awareness.

  26. Binaural Beat Demo • Two slight differing frequencies are played, one in each ear • In response, a binaural beat “warbling” frequency is produced by the brain

  27. Binaural Beat Demo A single tone is played in one ear. (monaural simulation)

  28. Binaural Beat Demo Another tone of slightly different pitch is played in the other ear. (monaural simulation)

  29. Binaural Beat Demo Together these sounds create the binaural beat. (monaural simulation)

  30. A sine-wave binaural beat has a limited potential to change brainwave states. (monaural simulation)

  31. Hemi-Sync uses effective, complex patterns to alter brainwaves and thereby modify arousal levels. (monaural simulation)

  32. In the Hemi-Sync process, pink sound is mixed with the binaural beating to enhance its effectiveness.

  33. Hemi-Sync Brain Mapping • Brain waves are recorded by EEG while Hemi-Sync theta frequencies are used • Brain left & right hemispheres synchronize with significant brain theta activity

  34. The colors illustrate the amplitude of theta brainwaves. Max Min
