  2. …Some Definitions... Meter-a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry. *”And he was always quietly arrayed. And he was always human when he talked.” Figure of Speech-a word or phrase that describes one thing in terms of something else and is not meant to be taking literally. Emerson. “Art is a jealous mistress.”

  3. …More… Symbolism-a literary movement which writers rearranged the world of appearance in order to reveal a more truthful version of reality. * Edgar Allen Poe, The Pit and the Pendulum. “ I was sick-sick unto death with that long agony.” Sound Effects in Poetry-creates specific literary effects using sound. Rhythm-the alternation of the stressed and unstressed syllables. Longfellow, The Song of Hiawatha “ At the door on summer evening sat a little Hiawatha, heard the whispering of the pine trees, sound of music, words of wonder…”

  4. …Even More Definitions… Rhyme-The repetition of vowel sounds in accented syllables and all succeeding symbols. * Longfellow, A Psalm of life. “ Tell me not, in mournful numbers, life is but an empty dream!-For the soul is dead that slumbers, and things are not what they seem.” Alliteration-The repetition of the sound in words that are close together. Longfellow, The tide rises, the tide falls. “But the sea, the sea in darkness calls.”

  5. …Terms… Assonance-The repetition of similar vowel sounds followed by different consonant sounds especially in words close together. * Edgar Allen Poe, The Raven… “Let me see, then, thereatis, and this mystery explore-let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore…” Consonance-The repetition of the same final sound on accented syllables or in an important word.

  6. …More Definitions… • Metaphor-a figure of speech that makes a comparison between 2 unlike things w/o the use of like, as, or resembles. *”Fame is a bee. It has a song- It has a sting- Ah, too, it has a wing.” Onomatopoeia-The use of words whose sound imitates it’s meaning. Edgar Allen Poe, The Raven. “Tapping at my chamber door- only this and nothing more.”

  7. William Cullen Bryant William wanted to replace conventional poetic diction with the speech of his own. He transformed American Romantic into his own way of speaking. He also tended to write about politics and religion.

  8. Writers Many writers have followed in the footsteps of many of the writers of American Literature. Back in the day, writers would write about politics and religion. You will see modern day writers do the same. Writers now use rhyme in their poems like Longfellow did when he wrote. Edgar Allen Poe used assonance when he wrote his work, and modern day writers use it even today.
