  1. The Settlement of Ville-Marie • Ville Marie was the first name of Montreal • Ville Marie was settled (started) in 1642 • Ville Marie was supposed to be a place where Missionaries could convert the First Occupants

  2. The Settlement of Ville-Marie • Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuvewas the man in charge of settling Ville-Marie • 10 years later, 100 new people live in Ville-Marie • By 1685, about 600 people live in Montreal

  3. The Settlement of Ville-Marie • Soon after Ville Marie was founded, 2 important women show up: • Jeanne Mance she started the first hospital • MargariteBourgoeys She started the first school

  4. The Settlement of Ville-Marie • In 1643, the First Occupant groups  the Iroquois started attacking Ville Marie • Ville Marie had to start protecting itself • Fortified walls and buildings were made • By 1700  Ville Marie was a walled city

  5. New France gets bigger • After 1663 more French explorers start travelling through North America • They mostly travelled by canoe • French explorers made it all the way to the Gulf of Mexico

  6. New France gets bigger • Because of the French explorers, New France can extend it’s territory. • By 1700, New France was 3-4 times as big as it was in the early 1600s
