  1. mLearning – erfaringer og fremtidsutsikter Aleksander DyeNKI Fjernundervisningenhttp://www.nki.no REN 10 Desember 2002

  2. NKI Fjernundervisningen • Hvert år har vi ca. 12000 aktive studenter • 124 studier og 441 kurs (09.12.2002) • Ca. 60 studier og ca. 380 kurs på Internet

  7. Hva er mLearing? • Følgendesitater er hentet fra: “The future of learning: From eLearning to mLearning” (Keegan, 2002): • “The ability to receive learning anytime, anywhere and on any device”(Thomas Chabra & Jessica Figueiredo Empowering Technologies, Inc., 2001). • “The point at which mobile computing and eLearning intersect to produce an anytime, anywhere learning experience”(Paul Harris: Goin’ Mobile, 2001). • “mLearning – it’s eLearning through mobile computational devices: Palms, Windows CE machines, even your digital cell phone”(Clark Quinn, Director of Cognitive Systems-KnowledgePlanet, 2001).

  8. Hva er mLearing? • Blant annet med utgangspunkt i disse definisjonene kom vi frem til følgende definisjon på mLearning:mLearning is the ability to study anytime, anywhere using a mobile device.

  9. Hvem deltok i undersøkelsen? • Dr. Clark Quinn Executive Director, OtterSurf Labs • Dr. Desmond Keegan Professor, International Distance and Online Education, NKI Distance Education, Norway • Dr. Georg Ströhlein WAP Developer, Fern Universität in Hagen, Germany • Dr. Heikki KynäslahtiResearcher, University of Helsinki, Finland • Dr. Helmut Fritsch Professor, Fern Universität in Hagen, Germany • Dr. Morten Flate PaulsenDirector of Development, NKI Internet College, Norway • Dr. Paul G. Shotsberger Associate Professor in the department of Mathematics and Statistics, Univ. Of North Carolina at Wilmington, USA • Sandi BarberLearning Innovation Consultant, Technology & Curriculum Innovation, The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, Canada • Johan Lundin Ph.D student - Mobile Competence Development for Nomads, University of Gothenburg, Sweden • Rune Haugen Founder, Mobilelearning Ltd., Norway • Tommy Strandvall Ph.D student, Faculty of Education, Åbo Akademi Univerity, Finland • Torstein Rekkedal Director of Reserach and Development, NKI Distance Education, Norway • Tove KristiansenProject Leader, Intermedia, University of Oslo, Norway • Kristian FolkmanProject manager, Research and Educational Network (REN)

  10. Spørsmålene • Which technologies (both existent and non-existent) and / or factors do you think will have the biggest impact on the adaptation of mLearning? • Which properties of the mobile device do you think will have the biggest impact on how fast mLearning is adapted? • How will mLearning change the work situation of a student? • How will mLearning change the work situation of a teacher?

  12. Which technologies (both existent and non-existent) and / or factors do you think will have the biggest impact on the adaptation of mLearning? High bandwidth wireless data transfer 21 Communications cost 19 3G mobile telephones (devices) and PDA:s with integrated communication technology. 18 Wireless internet access 18 Durable power source 13 Common understanding of learning as a lifelong continuous activity 11 Access to learning material anytime anywhere 10 Voice input (converted to text) and recognition 10 We take technology in use if we think that it will help us to fulfill these intentions (1- convenience/rationality, 2- expediency and 3- immediacy) 10 Content must be in place 9

  14. Which properties of the mobile device do you think will have the biggest impact on how fast mLearning is adapted? Internet access 27 The user friendliness 22 Compatibility PC - PDA 18 PDAs ability to read standard web pages 15 The connection speed 15 Interactivity 12 The connection cost of mobile services12 Wireless connectivity 12 Better screens 9 Screen size 8

• mLearning krever mye motivasjon hos studenten

  16. How will mLearning change the work situation of a student? Increased flexibility 31 Learning will take place in other environments 23 Higher demand on the students and their motivation 22 More just-in-time learning 18 Students will develop new ways of studying 16 Easier communication with teacher and fellow students 15 Student’s have to plan their time and take control over their own learning 14 Studying on the move 14 Learning adapted to users needs 11 It will make continuous learning come true 9

  18. How will mLearning change the work situation of a teacher? Increased flexibility 29 Classrooms can be extended to the real world 19 More rapid answers to the students’ questions will be demanded 19 No clear separation of work and value time 18 Traveling teachers may work on the move 14 Teachers will not be able to escape the students 13 Place will become both more and less important 12 Teachers need to learn how to make use of the mobile devices and how to produce content for mLearning and mobile devices 12 Focus on one-to-one training 10 Less time off from work 9
