  2. Warm-Up Activity In 3-5 sentences explain what you think happens to form tides.

  3. Gravity • Gravity is stronger when objects are closer together. • The moon will pull the water on the side of Earth nearest it more strongly than it pulls on Earth itself. • The positions of the moon can also effect the time and the height of the tides.

  4. Spring Tide • In line with the full moon, new moon, and the sun. • The greatest tidal range. • High tides are especially high and low tides are especially low during the Spring Tide. • They occur twice a month.

  5. Neap Tide • In line with the quarter phases. • Not in line with the sun. • High tides that are not very high and low tides that are not very low. • Occurs twice a month.

  6. Effect of Perigee • Perigee • The closest point to Earth in its orbit. • Tidal effect is greater • Especially if it occurs during the new moon and full moon phases.

  7. Effect of Apogee • Apogee • Farthest point from Earth. • Tidal effect is less.

  8. Tidal Range • The difference in the water level between high tide and low tide is called the tidal range. • Tidal ranges vary from one body of water to the next. • There’s two high tides and two low tides in a 24-hour period.
