  1. Welcome to Biology Mrs. Ollo 2010-2011

  2. What do we study? • We study all about living things! • Some topics we will focus on: • Cells Structure and Processes • DNA • Genetics/Inheritance • Genetic Engineering • Evolution • Bioethical Issues

Grading Grading will occur on a variety tasks that may include (but not limited to) the following: tests/quizzes homework/class work projects/presentations (individual or group) labs final authentic assessments (Lab practicals) Accounts for 8% of the final grade final exam Accounts for 8% of the final grade occasional extra-credit

  4. Supplies • Binder with pockets and dividers (extremely important to stay organized) • All handouts are hole punched for the students!! • Closed-toed lab shoes

  5. Homework policy • Homework is given daily • Weekly schedules and hw are posted on First Class at the beginning of each week • Late homework will not be accepted!

  6. Lab Policies • Labs will be carried out either individually or with lab partner depending upon the activity. • Lab partners will change every marking period • Labs will be evaluated or assessed based upon timeliness, completion and accuracy • Depending upon the lab, labs may be handed in for a group or individual grade.

  7. Late Assignment policy • Pertains only to labs and projects!!! • Students will have 24 hours to turn in a late assignment for a 50% reduction in credit. After 24 hours the assignment will be assigned a zero!

  8. Extra Help • Will be given to anyone that asks. • We will decide the best time that fits both the student and teacher’s schedule. • It will also always be held the day before a test after school.

  9. Usage of First Class • It is important to their class conference and documents folder each night! • Weekly schedules will always be posted as well so that due dates are available at all times! • PowerPoint Notes are also available to download prior to the class they will be discussed (they remain posted all year). • It also may be necessary to turn in assignments via First Class as well (hand-in folder).

  11. My goals this year!! • To peak your children’s interest in Biology- the study of life! • To get them excited about science! • To learn a lot about “life” and have fun along the way! • Get them ready for the road ahead… chemistry…physics and college! • Primarily with problem solving skills!!!
