Churchill Stands Up • After the Fall of France, Hitler expected Britain to negotiate peace with Germany. • Winston Churchill just replaced Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister • But on June 4, 1940, Churchill gave a defiant speech to Parliament, vowing that the British would never surrender. • Hitler prepares to invade Britain.

Battle of Britain • Hitler had to defeat the German air force before he could send troops via ship across the English Channel. • In June of 1940, the Luftwaffe began attacking British shipping on the English Channel. • By August the Luftwaffe started an all out battle to destroy the British Royal Air Force. • This air battle was known as the Battle of Britain.
