  2. What is critical portfolio? • Critical portfolio is an online portfolio service, FREE to NSNA members during their Student Nursing Career. • The service stores all of your achievements securely online. • A portfolio is not just a resume. It’s a holistic picture of you as a RN. • The service is accessible from anywhere you have the internet. • From the content you upload, you can create “portfolios” that are custom tailored to your target audience.

  3. What exactly is a “portfolio”? • Think of an artist’s portfolio. It’s not EVERYTHING they’ve done, but a collection of the pieces that best display the talent they are trying to show off. • So, if you are getting your first job – you create a portfolio using the items that are targeted to a hiring manager. • If you were applying to graduate school, instead you may select items that reflect your academic achievements. • It’s up to you what you send, and to whom you send it.

  4. Why do I need a “portfolio”? Why? Examples of work you can include: Through nursing school, and then as you move into your nursing career, you’ll accumulate a lot of documents and experiences. An online portfolio is safe from loss or damage. It sets you apart from others applying for the same position. Certifications Letters of Reference Examples of Work Examples of Projects Completed History of Conference Attendance List of Journal Articles Published History of Research Conducted Teaching History So much more!

  5. How do you create a portfolio? • It’s easy! • You upload to critical portfolio the documents you want to have available. • Next, you create a new portfolio. • You select what items you want to include in this particular portfolio. • Voila! Critical portfolio generates the portfolio for immediate online viewing, for e-mail as a .pdf / .docx or for internet viewing via an weblink. • The portfolios can be added or deleted as needed. You’re just grouping your content together in different ways, so the portfolios are just a snapshot of all you have.

  6. The “Dashboard”aka the homepage

  7. Add your items • Once you’ve set up your account. You add all the items you have that relate to you as a professional. • Also, you’ll fill in personal information that you’d typically find on a resume. • In addition, you’ll add all your extracurricular activities, commitments, and achievements. • These items will all be available for inclusion in the portfolios you create.

  8. Your portfolio list

  9. Your portfolio list • Remember, like an artist you want to showcase your talent based on the audience. • You create a new portfolio, and decide “what do I need to include for this person/audience.” • After selecting the items, Critical Portfolio will generate the document with any attachments you choose to include. • It looks like…

  10. Your portfolio!

  11. Your portfolio! • This is now ready to be distributed! • Your portfolios are saved on the website, and can be used again and again. • Update information as it changes. • Show off not only your talents and achievements, but your organizational skills, and ability to think strategically.

  12. Ready to set yours up? • Go to: www.criticalportfolio.net • Sign in using your NSNA member ID (from your NSNA membership card/ welcome email) • Your default password is: password • Then you just need to begin uploading your documents, and getting the basic information filled out. From there you can build portfolios to send off. Play with it when you have some time, and ask questions along the way.

  13. Tips! • Save your preceptor evaluations! They are like mini letters of recommendation. • If you have a really great rotation, don’t hesitate to ask your clinical instructor for a letter of recommendation. Don’’t wait until you're job hunting. • Update your portfolio as you go; add each volunteer event as you participate. You’ll remember what you did better, and exact names and dates. • Use the tool to showcase who you are as a RN. It may help your mobility towards CN 2 as a new RN, or to obtain your first committee position in your future hospital.

  14. Tips! • Just like you treat every clinical placement day as a potential job interview, treat each day with your clinical instructors as an evaluation – you’re ultimately seeking their recommendation when it comes time for job placement! • Also, remember that all presentations and essays are potentially pieces of work that you could use to show off your skills, knowledge, and talents. Putting effort into these will pay off when you need to present a portfolio to an employer or graduate school.
