  1. Erythropoietin BY: Olivia Nolan Jenna Larlee Shawanna Arrell

  2. What is Erythropoietin? Erythropoietin: Picture of Erythropoietin Is a form of protein that occurs naturally in the human body. This Protein is to stimulate bone marrow to make red blood cells. Which then increases Hemoglobin levels to rise. Hemoglobin allows oxygen to travel through out the body.

  3. Common uses of Erythropoietin • Erythropoietin is use to aid in treatment of Anemia. • It also is a alternative to getting a blood transfusion.

  4. Erythropoietin as a Sport Enhancement Erythropoietin causes an increase in hemoglobin which allows more oxygen to reach the muscles, it has been proven that increased oxygen supply allows the ability to increase your exercise performance. Therefore giving the needed boost to becoming the “great athlete”.

  5. How is Erythropoietin used? • Typically, blood doping involves removing 2 to 4 units (900-1800ml) of blood from an individual. The RBCs are spun and separated from plasma, then stored in glycerol. After a 2-3 month time delay, which allows for restoration of RBC in the athlete, and about 3-5 days before competition, the RBC are "washed" and rein fused. • The dosage of Erythropoietin if taken by IV in its artificial state, is usually 20-40IU/kg 3 times a week. The artificial state or man made Erythropoietin come in two types: Epoetin and Darbepoetin.

  6. Potional Side Effects • Flu like symptoms which usually happens at the beginning of treatment. • Seizures • Increased clotting. • Mild heart failure. • Increased blood pressure, which can cause constriction of the blood vessels. This can lead to more serious health complications even including death. It is believed that EPO was the cause of death for 19 Dutch and Belgian cyclists between the years of 1987 and 1990.

  7. The End Thank you!

  8. Back in the Game Sports Medicine is a clinic dedicated to the treatment of physical injuries to the body.
