SUICIDE AWARENESS THE PAST As we talk about suicide today, you may have either been suicidal yourself or have had someone significant in your life suicide. It’s normal to experience flashbacks during a workshop. You may want to talk with someone about it today or another time. It’s what you want to do.
SUICIDE AWARENESS We must all agree that any personal discussion during our time together today must be kept………….. CONFIDENTIAL
SUICIDE AWARENESS SUICIDE the “forever decision”
SUICIDE AWARENESS A DEPRESSIVE LOSS OR CHANGE IS THE FIRST INDICATOR OF SUICIDE POTENTIAL
SUICIDE AWARENESS ACUTE OR CHRONIC DEPRESSION IS THE MAJOR INDICATOR OF SUICIDE POTENTIAL
SUICIDE AWARENESS The best way to find out if a person is suicidal is to? ASK
SUICIDE AWARENESS DO WE HAVE A SUICIDE PROBLEM IN AUSTRALIA? Each day, at least 7 people die from suicide. Each day, at least 110 people attempt suicide. Teenage suicide has trebled in the last 30 years.
SUICIDE AWARENESS More than 2,000 people die by suicide each year. That’s the size of some country towns every year. Since 1991, more people have suicided than have been killed in motor vehicle collisions.
SUICIDE AWARENESS Males are 5 times more likely to suicide than females. There is a higher youth suicide rate in the rural areas than in the urban areas. Males under 25 have a high suicide rate. There are more suicides than homicides.
SUICIDE AWARENESS Rates of suicide amongst our indigenous people are higher than the rest of the population, proportionately. Rates of suicide for males 60 years and over are rising sharply. Australia is ranked 5th in the world for suicide.
SUICIDE AWARENESS In June 2002, Australia was rated No.1 in the world for the highest suicide rate of young males. (aged 25 years and under) This has improved in 2006

SUICIDE AWARENESS You should FIRST NOTICE their CIRCUMSTANCES A depressing loss or change is the first suicide risk factor. Signs and symptoms come later as their circumstances fail to resolve themselves.
SUICIDE AWARENESS If I find out that a person has suffered a loss or change, how do I find out if they’re depressed about it? Ask, “Are you depressed over that event or not?”
SUICIDE AWARENESS How do I find out how deeply depressed they are? Ask, “On a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is a little down and 10 is devastated, how depressed are you?”
