  2. The Microscope The microscope is an important educational tool used in scientific research and education. Scientists used microscopes to help them study cells and many important things. It is important because it helped us discover bacteria, fungi, medicines, and other microscopic organisms.

  3. The Problem From ancient times, man has wanted to see things far smaller than could be perceived with the naked eye. This led to the construction, in the 16th century, of a magnifier composed of a single convex lens, and this, in turn, led to the eventual development of the microscope.

  4. More than 400 years ago in Holland, Zacharias Janssen was in the business of grinding lenses for eyeglasses. Some of his lenses made things look bigger.  He found that he could put two lenses together to make things look a LOT bigger. So, in about 1595, Zacharias built the first microscope. ("Micro" means "small."  "Scope" means "to see.") The Inventor of the microscope

  5. Story of the Invention Man has wanted to see things far smaller than they already are. It all started when Zacharias Janssen put some of his lenses together and the invention started.  He found that he could put two lenses together to make things look a LOT bigger.

  6. How the Invention works In the compound microscope, the lens closer to the object to be viewed is refers to as the "objective", while the lens closer to the eye is called the "eyepiece". A simple microscope has one lens and is essentially a loupe or magnifying glass with a relatively high magnification.

  7. How the Invention solves the Problem It is commonly used by scientists and researchers to see details on tiny objects such as bacteria, pollen, miniscule insects, and the cells of living tissue. Doctors look inside a human body to see if there are any diseases and find a cure for the patient as soon as possible. Scientists use microscopes to help them do further research in their studies. Humans also get to see what a naked eye can’t see.

  8. What did humans do before this Invention? In the ancient times the people believed that the diseases were caused by spiritual effects. In medieval times the people believed more in the church than in science. Before the invention of the microscope, nobody knew that the microscopic world existed. As a result nobody knew what they were missing out on, and so there were no known difficulties to not having microscopes. After the invention of the microscope, people took a step back and look what has caused the diseases to occur.

  9. How has this Invention improved human life? Microscopes improved our lives because some people with cancer could die,Microscopes helped doctors look at cells and determine cancer cells, so they were easier to remove, when they reproduced. Scientists also used microscopes, and still do because it is easier to see the cells, bacteria, and other microorganisms from the microscope. The microscope gives scientists the ability to see organisms that are not visible to the naked eye. It also allows them to see bacteria which aids in cures of diseases. That is how microscopes improved our lives.

  10. Changes of the Microscope The oldest microscope is the optical microscope, which magnifies by way of light and lenses. When there is one lens, it is a simple microscope (not unlike a magnifying glass), whereas multiple lens systems are called compound microscopes.



  11. How has the Microscope created new problems for us? Microscopes, during this time of period in life, did not cause any problems. The microscope is a very helpful tool because they allow doctors and researchers to view and examine organisms to minuscule to study without magnetization. Many of these organisms cause diseases, and microscopes help us learn about how to prevent them.

Timeline 14th century – The art of grinding lenses is developed in Italy and spectacles are made to improve eyesight. 1590 – Dutch lens grinders Hans and Zacharias Janssen make the first microscope by placing two lenses in a tube. 1667 – Robert Hooke studies various object with his microscope and publishes his results in Micrographic. 1675 – Anton van Leeuwenhoek uses a simple microscope with only one lens to look at blood, insects and many other objects. 18th century – Several technical innovations make microscopes better and easier to handle, which leads to microscopy becoming more and more popular among scientists. 1878 – Ernst Abbe formulates a mathematical theory correlating resolution to the wavelength of light. 1903 – Richard Zsigmondy develops the ultra microscope and is able to study objects below the wavelength of light. 1938 – Ernst Ruska develops the electron microscope. 1981 – Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer invent the scanning tunneling microscope that gives three-dimensional images of objects down to the atomic level.
