  1. TFI PK5TFI PK-bio ”Hållbara biobränslen” ”Sustainable Bio-fuels” Background and status of the sub-programme TRI Annual Conference Copenhagen, 15.-16.9. 2010 Jakob Kr. Kristjánsson, Arkea - VC Investments Leader of the sub-programme committee TFI PK-bio: MF & JKK (9/2010)

  2. Bio-fuels in Europe – present targets • In 2005 – 2%. Reality was 1%. • In 2010 – 5.75%. Now far away from goal. • Would need 20% of land but only ca. 7% is available • Nordic countries have a lot of forest land available • In 2020 – 10% binding minimum of biofuels • Total renewable energy of 20% • Reducing CO2 by 20% • Energy savings by 20% • Major challenges: Technology, logistics, land for non-food etc.

  3. PK-bio and PK-bio activities PK-members • From all five Nordic countries • One ordinary + one deputy member per country Work method • Physical meetings (5 meetings so far) • Telephone meetings (3 telephone meeting so far) Collaboration • Active participation by all member • Efficient, constructive and problem-free work progress

  4. PK-bio sub-programme scope & limitations Thematic area • Raw material: ligno-cellulose based feed stocks • Processes: bio- and/or thermo-chemical conversion technologies • End-products: liquid and/or gaseous bio-fuels

  6. PK-bio call for proposals 2010 Call details • Integrated projects • Two phase application process • Max 30 M NOK for project financing • Max 10 M NOK/project, max 75 % TFI-financing

  7. Application Phase I (”pre-applications”) • Call open 15.10.2009 • Pre-application dead-line 15.12.2009 • 31 pre-application • Applying for 244 M NOK (of 342 M NOK) • In general high quality (only very few weak or of low interest) • Internal evaluation by PK-bio-members • Consensus screening without any problems 20.1.2010 • 10 applications from phase I -> phase II • Success-rate (by number, phase I -> II) for applicants 32 %

  8. Application phase II (”full applications”) • Full application dead-line 15.3.2010 • 10 full applications (as invited to phase II) • Applying for 89 M NOK (of 131 M NOK) • Evaluation by external international non-Nordic experts • In general of high quality (i.e. “Top-level Research”) • Grades 3-4-5: Projects in ”top-category” • Grades 2-3-4: Projects weaker or less interesting than average • Final selection by sub-programme committee • Four projects to finance • Final success-rate 13 % (by number and by budget)

  9. “Success rate” for applications (number) 32 % 13 % Phase I->II Selected Applications Phase I Phase II

  10. Selected projects (2010-2014) 1) ”BioEng”, 2010-2013 • Project leader: NTNU, Norway • Participants from Denmark, Norway and Sweden • TFI-financing 4,4 M NOK (53 % of 8,3 M NOK) 2) ”HGBiofuels” • Project leader: Chalmers University, Sweden • Participants from Demark, Norway and Sweden • TFI-financing 6,2 M NOK (75 % of 8,3 M NOK) 3) ”NORD-SYNGAS” • Project leader: VTT, Finland • Participants from Finland, Norway and Sweden • TFI-financing 9,4 M NOK (54 % of 17,4 M NOK) 4) ”SusBioFuel” • Project leader: SINTEF, Norway • Participants from all Nordic countries • TFI-financing 9,3 M NOK (74 % of 12,5 M NOK)
