  3. 34 PLACEMENTS 20 PARTNER ORGANISATIONS 14 COUNTRIES Summer placements: 19 placements available Undergraduates, graduates or equivalent Interest in development – don’t have to be an engineer Water and sanitation, transport, energy, ICT, habitat… 6-12 month placements: 15 opportunities overseas Graduates or industrial year out Renewable energies, habitat, water, shelter… 2009 Placements

Tell me more… • Support • Dedicated EWB-UK training course in mid-June • Support from EWB-UK project manager throughout • Preparation • You will be responsible for agreeing project goals and practicalities (flights, visas, immunisations) • Most placements require thorough research and preparation in advance – we’re here to help! • Return • A debrief and help with an evaluation • Invited to share your experience (presentations, press)

Costs • EWB-UK believes in giving young people opportunities to get involved in international development work. • We will cover as much of the cost of your placement as we can – but you will need to contribute also. • Volunteers going on 3 month or 6 month placements are asked to contribute up to £600. • Volunteers going on 12 month placements are asked to contribute up to £900.

  7. Important Note All placements are subject to alteration or cancellation at the discretion of EWB-UK All EWB-UK placements are conditional on the following: 1. Successful identification of suitable candidate 2. Favourable country security assessment 3. EWB-UK securing the necessary funds for its share of the cost of the placement

How to apply… • Stage 1: Online Application • Applications open until midnight on 15th March • Visit www.ewb-uk.org for full info & application • Stage 2: Interview • Interviews at end of March to early April • You must attend an interview • You may be required to travel to the interview • Candidates will be selected for their technical and non-technical suitability for the placement, their interest in global issues and their potential future contribution to development, based on evidence

SELCO SELCO Bangalore, India Improved Cooking Stoves 2 volunteers for 3 months A 3-month placement working in SELCO’s Innovations department to research, develop and trial a prototype 'Improved Cooking Stove'. Indoor air pollution from the burning of solid fuels for cooking is the fourth largest cause of death in the world's poorest countries, killing more than 1.5m people each year worldwide. The improved cooking stove is a simple yet effective way of reducing smoke inhalation and improving health and quality of life.

  13. KACCAD Kyosiga Community Christian Association for Development Uganda Construction of a Community and Volunteer Centre 1 volunteer for 3 months A 3 month placement in Uganda to construct a Community and Volunteer centre, and Farm Houses.

  15. CSE CSE Delhi, India Campaign Research 1 volunteer for 3 months The volunteer will research and develop reports for CSE's ‘Down to Earth’ publication.

  17. RUCHI Rural Centre for Human Interests India Neri Ratoli Cold Storage 1 volunteer for 3 months A 3-month placement involving the design and construction of a cold storage facility in rural India which local farmers can use instead of travelling over 100 km away to the nearest store.

  19. RUCHI Rural Centre for Human Interests India Shyamaghat Model Rainwater Village 1 volunteer for 3 months A 3 month placement to improve access to water and provide basic hygiene facilities. To assist RUCHIs dedicated health workers in educating villagers on hygiene and health.

  20. AIDECO

AIDECO AIDECO Anbdour & Imi n’tizghte, Morocco Construction, renovation and expansion of local irrigation and agricultural infrastructure 2 volunteers for 3 months A 3 month placement to increase the agricultural productivity in the villages of Anbdour and Imi n’tizghte and provide a model for development in the other villages of the Ammeln valley.

  22. SHELTER ASSOCIATES

SHELTER ASSOCIATES Shelter Associates Pune, India GIS Mapping 2 volunteers for 3 months A 3 month placement in Data Analysis and GIS mapping (including using open source programming solutions) to help map and analyse slum areas in Prune India. These maps are then used to help provide baseline information for development plans such as housing and sanitation plans.

  25. NSET National Society for Earthquake Technology Nepal Developing the Governmental Schools Earthquake Programme 1 volunteer for 3 months A 3-month placement helping to develop guidelines for the Government programme on Schools Earthquake Safety.

APTIVATE Aptivate Cambridge Software development; web technologies development, research and information dissemination 2 volunteers for 3 months Based in Cambridge, Aptivate develops ICT services that facilitate communication for unconnected communities. The volunteer will be office based, developing webware and software.

REDES REDES El Salvador Investigation into housing and sanitation in rural communities in El Salvador 2 placements for 3 months A 3-month placement working with a small NGO, to carry out surveys, assessments and then make recommendations on, housing, sanitation and social projects in rural communities in El Salvador.

  30. ACTED

  31. ACTED Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development Indonesia Development & Rehabilitation of an Island’s Rural Road Network 1 volunteer for 3 months A 3 month placement working closely with beneficiary communities to improve the road infrastructure across the island of Nias, helping to directly and indirectly improve the quality of life of local populations, ACTED is an international organisation with local programmes in Indonesia.

  33. ACTED Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development Indonesia Disaster Risk Reduction 1 volunteer for 3 months (possibility of salaried role following successful completion of project) A 3 month placement working closely with local communities to develop and implement projects that reduce devastation in the aftermath of disasters, ACTED is an international organisation with local programmes in Indonesia.

ARTI Appropriate Rural Technology Institute Phaltan, India Rural energy production from biogas 2 volunteers for 3 months A 3 month placement with a mid-size NGO that promotes rural development in Maharashtra, central India. This is a research and development based placement investigating the effectiveness of biogas electricity generating systems.

SIBAT Sibol ng Agham at Teknolohiva The Philippines Community-based renewable energy systems 1 volunteer for 12 months A 12 month placement with SIBAT, a Filipino non-governmental organisation developing and installing Community-Based Renewable Energy Systems, including micro-hydro systems, solar PV water pumps and wind turbines.

GVEP Global Village Energy Partnership Kenya Developing Energy Enterprises Project East Africa 1 volunteer for 6 months A 6-month placement supporting GVEP International’s project to increase the availability and quality of energy products and services in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda through the development of micro and small energy enterprises.

  42. RCSC The Royal Commonwealth Society of Cameroon Cameroon Kurume Water Project Initiative 3 volunteers for 6 months A 6 month placement to rehabilitate the Kurume water storage tank, treatment of the water and extending the area covered by the water supply

  43. UWCM

UWCM Uganda Women Concern Ministry Uganda Rural Water and Sanitation Pilot Project 1 volunteer for 6 months A 6 month placement involving the implementation of a water and sanitation project which will deliver a sustainable water supply and appropriate sanitation to a village in Eastern Uganda.

  45. PiD

  46. PiD Partners in Development Maputaland, South Africa Sustaining Rope and Washer Pumps 1 volunteer for 6 months A 6 month placement improving the sustainability and reliability of family-centred water supply in the remote parts of Maputaland, South Africa. This involves the continuation of work by a previous EWB-UK volunteer to monitor, evaluate, and where necessary improve on the design of rope and washer pumps used in conjunction with shallow wells.

  48. SHELTER CENTRE Shelter Centre Switzerland Resources research and dissemination 4 volunteers for 6 months A 6 month placement working with Shelter Centre assisting on one of a number of projects.

  49. LIRE

  50. LIRE Laos Institute for Renewable Energy Lao PDR Research into Rural Energy and Water 1 volunteer for 6 months A 6 month placement which encompasses rural bio-fuel generation, gasification of crop residues, software development for hybrid electricity grids, and development of rural water purification systems. The project will also involve collaboration with a local renewable energy provider, Sunlabob.
