FLOSSING • Using a special thread-like material to remove plaque and food particles between teeth and gums.
HOW TO FLOSS-To receive maximum benefits from flossing, use the following proper technique: • Start with about 18 inches of floss, wind around fingers leaving an inch or two of floss to work with • Holding the floss tautly, slide it gently up-and-down between your teeth • Gently curve the floss around the base of each tooth, moving up and down into the gum • Use clean sections of floss as you move from tooth to tooth • To remove the floss, use the same back-and-forth motion to bring the floss up and away from the teeth
HISTORY OF FLOSSING • Levi Spear Parmly is the one given credit for inventing dental floss. He tried hard to get people to floss with silk thread in the early 1800's. Later on, Johnson and Johnson got the patent to make dental floss.
THE IMPORTANCE OF FLOSSING • Removes plaque that forms between teeth • Essential for avoiding periodontal disease • Essential for avoiding tooth loss. • Studies have even shown that flossing can also help prevent heart attacks and strokes.
