  2. Scientists in the past defined HEALTH simply as "an absence of disease or illness”. • Today the term “Health” means more than just our physical health. There are 6 areas we need to consider when talking about our health.

  5. “Wellness” is the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.

  6. 6 Components of Health Wellness = Being the best we can in every area of our HEALTH makes up our well-being, also known as our WELLNESS.

  7. So what is included in each of the component areas?

  8. Physical Health

  9. “Physical health” is everything that has to do with our bodies. • It includes personal attention to and maintenance of overall health through nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and positive healthy habits. Physical Health

  10. What effect does physical activity have on our health now… … and in the future?

  11. Emotional Health

  12. Emotionally healthy people feel safe and secure with their own emotions and feelings. • They express emotions in positive, nondestructive ways. They are assertive about their needs. • They are able to cope with unpleasant emotions in healthy ways. Emotional Health

  13. If you are emotionally healthy, chances are good that you have a healthy self-esteem. • Your emotional health can greatly influence all the other areas of your health.

  14. Social Health

  15. “Social health” refers to the relationships you have in your life with family and friends and the kinds of support that you receive from them. Social Health • Socially healthy people respect others and avoid those who don’t treat them with respect and tolerance.

  16. Why do you think we tear people down to build ourselves up?

  17. Mental Health

  18. A mentally healthy person: • realizes his or her own abilities • copes with the normal stresses of daily life • works productively • has fulfilling relationships with others • adapts to change and copes with adversity. Mental Health

  19. Your mental health can be greatly influenced by your emotional health. It may be difficult to see when a person has a mental health issue. Changes in mental health behavior are sometimes attributed to other causes.

  20. Spiritual Health

  21. “Spiritual health” is a personal matter involving values and beliefs that provide a purpose for our lives. • The basis of spirituality is discovering a sense of meaning in your life and coming to know that you have a purpose to fulfill. Spiritual Health

  22. Spiritual Health has a bigger impact on your life than most people realize. In your opinion, who ultimately controls your destiny?

  24. Environment = your surroundings, the area where you live, and all the things you have contact with (air, water, land). • “Environmental health” is the awareness of protecting both the natural and built environments for the benefit of human health. Environmental Health

  25. Environmental Health includes keeping your… • air clean • water clean • food safe • land enjoyable and safe • Recycling Programs • Reducing Fossil Fuel Emissions

  26. Asthma • Birth Defects • Cancer • Carbon Monoxide Poisoning • Lead Poisoning • Heart Attacks • Reproductive and Birth Issues • Developmental Disabilities Environmental Health Issues

  27. 1 Billion people are added to the earth every 12 years . . . 220,000 every day What types of problems could arise because of overpopulation? OVERPOPULATION & Health

EPA- United States Environmental Protection Agency: • Reduced harmful levels of lead. • Lowered tailpipe emissions from cars. • Decreased health hazards like skin cancer through international treaties that protect the atmospheric ozone layer. • Cleaned up toxic wastes to protect our water. • Improved the quality of our drinking water and our surface waters. • Reduced secondhand tobacco smoke and exposure to asbestos. • Increased fuel efficiency for our cars and trucks.   35. A GOAL is something that you work toward and hope to achieve. Goals can act as DIRECTIONS for your life to help you stay focused. “If you aim at nothing you will hit it every time.”

  36. What are SHORT-TERM goals? …goals that can be achieved quickly.

  37. What are LONG-TERM goals? … goals that take months or even years to achieve.

  38. What are mid-range goals? … goals that are stepping stones leading from short-term goals to long-term goals You use mid-range goals like checkpoints to move from where you are now to your ultimate goal.
