  1. EE/ME Project Platform Remote control /autonomous vehicle with animated rider

  2. What is it? It is a hardware platform that will be made available to students in both EE and ME design classes. The purpose is to provide a place or ‘platform’ that students can utilize as a base for individual or team projects.

  3. Really, What is it? Right now it consists of two main parts: • A motorized toy vehicle; the kind Toys-R-Us sells that a toddler can sit in and drive. (no … you don’t get to sit in it). • A remote control / computer subsystem. This is the ‘brains’ of the outfit allowing for remote control operation (via an 6 channel RF transmitter/receiver) as well as autonomous control (programmed control/guidance using sensors, a 18FXXX PIC Microcontroller and a customized C based programming package).

  4. What do you want it to be when finished? Eventually we would like to have a large remote control vehicle that has an animated passenger or ‘mascot’ (perhaps a panther … a geek …??). Besides movement, the passenger could have the ability to speak and listen (via a wireless audio link). The vehicle could be outfitted with a wireless video link (perhaps a wireless webcam?). There are many options for various sensors, actuators and control schemes.

  5. Why are you doing this? What is the goal? • The real goal is to provide a platform for students to utilize for design projects. • A secondary goal is to have a really cool remote control and/or autonomous vehicle that can be used to showcase the School of Engineering at events like open house, freshman orientation, visits to grade schools etc. This will essentially be a public relations and recruiting tool.

  6. What kind of projects could be incorporated right now? • Motor control / power module • Two way audio link … sound effects • Large servo motor for steering • Front and rear proximity sensors • Power supply / battery management system • Mouth actuator (the passengers mouth moves when he speaks) • Voice recognition subsystem to aid in control • Lighting control – Headlights, blinkers, dash, dimming
