  2. Juneteenth • June 19, 1865 General Gordon Granger and the US Army arrive in Galveston, Texas • He read General Order Number 3 to the people of Galveston • Galveston was one of the last places in the United States that still had not freed its slaves

  4. Juneteenth • The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863 • General Lee surrended to General Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865 • President Lincoln was assassinated on April 15, 1865 • General Granger arrives in Galveston on June 19, 1865

  5. Juneteenth • Why was there still slavery in Texas on June 19th 1865? • History teaches us that there were many possible reasons why slaves in Texas hadn’t been freed. Brainstorm with someone to identify 3 reasons.
