  2. The Original Eye Glass • In the early civilizations of Ancient Rome and Greece there are mentions of reading stones. The ancient writings tell that the discs were used for the elderly to magnify items so they could see them. • The “discs for the eyes” is found later in history. • But the first pair of “eye glasses,” are found in Pisa Italy in the 1200s. They consisted of two framed glass or crystal stones, and were held up to the eyes using a handle.

Johannes Kepler • Born on Dec. 27, 1571 in Germany. • He learned about Copernicus in University and became fascinated with his idea. • He made many astronomical discoveries. • He had a wife and two sons. • He died in 1663. • In his book Astronomia Pars Optica, for which he earned the title of founder of modern optics he was the: • First to investigate the formation of pictures with a pin hole camera; • First to explain the process of vision by refraction within the eye; • First to formulate eyeglass designing for nearsightedness and farsightedness; • First to explain the use of both eyes for depth perception.

  4. Eye Glasses Timeline • 1700s - The middle and lower Class were usually mounted on hard materials while the upper glass might be mounted on gold or leather. 1784 – Benjamin Franklin invents the bi-focal.
