  2. Standard R3.1 • Articulate the expressed purposes and characteristics of different forms of prose

  3. Describe the following forms of prose • Short Story • Novel • Novella • Essay • Memoir

  4. Describe the following forms of prose • Short Story: few characters, focus on one major conflict • Novel: longer, divided by chapter, more characters, more conflicts • Biography: written about someone’s life, vary in length • Essay: expresses an opinion on a topic, short • Memoir: normally autobiographical, focuses on one specific event

  5. Standard R3.2 • Identify events that advance the plot and determine how each event explains past or present action or foreshadows future action.

  6. What is plot? • Define plot: • List the parts of plot: • What is foreshadowing?

  7. What is plot? • Define plot: the series of events that happens in a story • List the parts of plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution • What is foreshadowing? Hinting at future events (Example: the girl’s cold hands in the “Stranger” )

  8. Standard R3.3 • Analyze characterization as delineated through a character’s thoughts, words, speech patterns, and actions’ the narrator’s description, and the thoughts words, and actions of other characters.

  9. Characterization • Describe Rainbow Fish. • What is his personality like? • What can we tell from his words to the little blue fish? • What do others think of him? • What do others say about him? • How does the narrator describe him?

  11. Theme • What is theme? • Describe the theme of the following stories: • Rainbow Fish • Thank You Ma’am • Seventh Grade

  12. Theme • What is theme? • The meaning, moral, or message that the author wants the reader to get from the story • Describe the theme of the following stories: • Rainbow Fish: sharing • Thank You Ma’am: value of kindness • Seventh Grade: being yourself

  14. Define the following terms: • First person POV • Third person POV • Omniscient POV • Limited POV

Define the following terms: • First person POV: the narrator is a character in the story; uses pronouns like I, me, and we; narration is subjective because the narrator uses his/her opinion • Third person POV: the narrator is NOT a character in the story; uses pronouns like he/she, they, them; narration is objective because the narrator does not use his/her opinion • Omniscient POV: the narrator can tell about the thoughts and feelings of two or more characters; all-knowing • Limited POV: the narrator can tell the thoughts and feelings of only one character
