Biography • Born in July 11, 1943 • He is son of parents that fled from Nazi persecution. • Howard was born shortly after his brother Eric died in an accident. • As Gardner grew neither of those events were discussed and they were linked to his parents refusal of letting him play sports.
Childhood • Byage 13 he became a greatpianist. • He considered a career in music • He alsowas a boy scout and he achievedtherank of Eagle Scout. • Howard’sparentsdidntlethimplaysports in schoolbecauseitwas a link toEric’sdeath.
Gardner’sInterests • Howard Gardner entered Harvard in 1961. • Hisinterestwasmajoring in history • Undertheinfluence of Erik Erikson he changedhismajorto social relations (combination of psychology, sociology and anthropology) • He changedhisinterestagainafterencounteringpsychologistJeromeBruner and thewriting of Jean Piaget.
Finishing College • AfterfinishinghisPh.D at Harvard in 1971, Howard Gardner continuedworking at Harvard. • He established a researchteamwith Nelson Goodmanonarts and education. Theprojectwasknown as Project Zero • Project Zeroisthestudy of artisticthough and creativity in arts, alsohumanistic and scientific disciplines. • Garderstillremainesinvolved in theproject.
Gardner’sTheory of MultipleIntelligences • Thetheory of MultipleIntelligenceswasproposedby Howard Gardner in 1983. • Thistheoryisan idea thatexplainsthatthere are differenttypes of intelligences in humanbeings. • He proposedthistheorybecause he wantedtoaccurately define the concept of intelligence and toprovewhethermethodswhichclaimtomeasureintelligence are trullyscientific. • Gardner’stheoryarguesthatintelligence as itistraditionallydefined, doesntexplainthewidevariety of abilitieshumansdisplay.
Gardner’s Categories of Intelligences • The categories of intelligences proposed by Gardner are: • Bodily- Kinesthetic • Interpersonal • Verbal- Linguistic • Intrapersonal • Visual- Spatial • Musical • Naturalistic • Logical- Mathematical
Bodily- Kinesthetic and Interpersonal Bodily- Kinesthetic • Has to do withthebodilymovement and phisiology. • In theorypeoplewiththisintelligencelearnbetterwheninvolving muscular movement, and generallygood at physicalactivities. Interpersonal • Thisarea has to do withtheinteractionwithothers. • Theytendtocommunicateeasily and effectivelywithothers, and maybeeitherleaders of followers
Verbal- Linguistic and Intrapersonal Verbal- Linguistic • Has to do with either written or spoken words. Poeple with high verbal- linguistic intelligene display facility with words and languages. • This intelligence is highest in writers, lawyers, philosophers, journalists, politicians, poets, and teachers. Intrapersonal • Thosewho are strongest in thisintelligence are typicallyintroverts and prefertoworkalone • They are usuallyhighlyself- aware and capable of understandingtheirownemotions, goals and motivations
Visual- Spatial and Musical Visual- Spatial • Thisarea has to do withvision and spatialjudgement • People with strong visual- spatial intelligence are good at visually and mentally manipulating objects Musical • This has to do withhearing, rhythm and music. • Those who have a high level of musical intelligence, display greater sensitivity to sounds, rhythm, tones and music.
Naturalistic and Logical- Mathematical Naturalistic • This area has to do with nature, nurturing and relating information to one’s natural soroundings. • This intelligence was not part of Gardner’s original theory but was added in 1997. Logical- Mathematical • This area has to do with logic, abstractions, reasoning and numbers. • Careers which suit this intelligence include scientists,mathematicians, engineers, doctors and economists.
