Why there are tides. • An ocean tide is the rise and fall of the ocean’s water. • Tides are caused by minor differences in gravitational attraction between the sun and the moon. • When the moon is farther from one side of the earths ocean that farther side is where there is a low tide. The side closest to the moon is a high tide. • There are two big humps of water on the earth where water is held.
