  4. Overview of Rock Hall • Topography appears to be flat • Elevation ranges from 4-24 ft above sea level • It is in Kent County • Nearest large city is Chestertown • Plenty of outdoor activities available • High tourist area in the warmer months • Known for being a sailing/boating destination

  5. Statistics • Air & water quality average to below-average • 5 police officers & a VFD • Crime rate low • Limited options for day care, employment & health care

  6. Overview of Rock Hall Residents • Population of Rock Hall: 1,318 • Population of Kent County: 20,000 • It is the least populated county in Maryland • Average age is 54 • About 50/50 for males v. females • Mainly Caucasian community • 25% high school graduates • 25% college graduates

  7. Income Main Occupations: • Fishing, crabbing, hunting, forest & logging Common Industry: • Hotel/accommodation and food services

Concerns • 40% of population has state medical assistance • 15% of population has no medical insurance • Only 2 PCP’s and 1 dentist • 30% are low income • 20% are age 65 and above • Designated as Medically Underserved Population (MUP) • H/o being a Primary Care Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA)

  9. Top Health Problems • Heart Disease • CVA/Strokes • Cancer (lung & bronchus) • Accidents • Alzheimer Related Deaths • Obesity • Poor Dental Care

Community Diagnosis & Goals DEFICIENT COMMUNITY HEALTH • Limited access to health services • Limited attainment of health care insurance GOALS • Improve access to comprehensive quality health services • Recruit additional health and dental practitioners • Provide health care services to seasonal residents and tourists • Encourage active participation of residents in their own health care
