  3. eService Learning… AGENDA Civic Engagement & Service-Learning What is e-service learning? How does it work Getting started / Next steps

  4. E-Service Learning… Civic Engagement: “Civic Engagement, as defined by Thomas Ehrlich (2000), means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values, and motivation to make that difference. A morally and civically responsible individual recognizes himself or herself as a member of a larger social fabric.”

  5. E-Service Learning… Service-learning: “Teaching and learning strategy integrating meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities” (Learn and Service America, 2010) According to the Journal for Civic Commitment, “Service-learning brings examples of current issues we face as a nation, and as a planet, to the forefront of academic curricula, and allows students to experience them firsthand. In addition, students examine their own roles, their own actions, in the preservation and maintenance of democracy.”

  6. eService-Learning

  7. Types of Service-Learning Direct Service: Students have face-to-face contact with the service recipients. For example: tutoring or working with city/state initiative such as Focus First. Indirect Service: Students perform a service without having face-to-face contact with the recipient. Usually resources are channeled to help alleviate a problem. For example: environmental projects, etc.

  8. Types of Service-Learning – cont. Advocacy-based: Students educate others about a particular issue with the goal being to eliminate the cause of a particular problem. For example: writing letters to legislators or editors; preparing and displaying posters, plays, or other educational materials for others Research-based: Students conduct research about a particular issue with the goal being to eliminate the cause of a particular problem. For example: conducting research to map areas of food insecurity within a community.
