Fitzroya cupressoides: The Ancient Evergreen Giant of South America

Fitzroya cupressoides, a majestic evergreen tree belonging to the Cupressaceae family, can reach heights of 40 to 70 meters in South America, with trunk diameters up to 5 meters. Notable for its unique foliage, its leaves have a distinct two white stomatal band. The species is characterized by its reddish-brown trunk. First discovered by Charles Darwin, a specimen in Chile was dated at an astounding 3,622 years old in 1993. Fossils of Fitzroya leaves, 35 million years old, were found in Northwest Tasmania, showcasing its ancient lineage.
